would it make sense to use a mil dot/moa scope at a different magnification to make it a moa/moa (reticle/adjustment knob)?
Ok, of course we're talking about a variable scope, second focal plane. At 'some' magnification, the dot spacing will represent 1 mil. I propose that at a 'different' magnification, the dot spacing can represent (3 or 4 or 5) moa. This could make a lower end mil dot scope function like the more recently popular designs that have reticle spacing and adjustment knobs matching (i.e. mil/mil or moa/moa).
Example.
Using Nikon Buckmasters Rifle Scope 6-18x 40mm Side Focus Mil-Dot Reticle Matte,
mil dot is calibrated at 12x. Set at 12x, dot spacing is 3.6" at 100 yds. Zoom down to ~10.8x, and dot spacing will now cover 4", or 4 shooter's moa. Now the dot space matches the click adjustment (in this case 1/8 moa per click). 8.6x could make dot spacing 5 moa, 14.4x would be 3 moa. I would scale up and 'calibrate' at 25 yds for more precision on finding the proper magnification ring setting.

Haven't done it yet, just thinking it out loud.

Re: poor man's MOA/MOA?

I have done it with my NF 5.5-22 scope. I just put up a MOA scale at exactly 100yds and lined up my reticle on it and by adjusting the power ring, set it to match the scale. Think it came out to 19-20X or so. Never really was a fan of FFP although my S&B is FFP.
