Rifle Scopes positioning of Butler Creek scope lens covers

Perhaps an odd question, but what's the preferred positioning of Butler Creek scope caps? Sometimes I see 'em positioned to flip straight up, and sometimes I see 'em positioned to flip open to the right for a right-handed shooter (especially the cover on the front objective). I've also seen the rear cover open to the upper left with ballistic / trajectory notes inside the cover.

I realize that shooter preference comes into play, but what's the reasoning behind the positioning, and which way do you prefer?

Thanks

Re: positioning of Butler Creek scope lens covers

Some believe that clocking the cover to not allow a three-black-circles-in-a-line look as viewed from the front is beneficial to the DM, as a target would have an easier time seeing the three in a line as opposed to other configurations.

Personally, I'd just put the cover on however way is easier to open; or whatever position placed the cover in easiest viewing position if the drops were located inside the cap.

Re: positioning of Butler Creek scope lens covers

On my bolt guns I like to position the front cover to open to the right since that allows me to use my left hand to easily open it with one quick motion. On my carbine I like to have the objective cover open downwards so that it rests out of the way on the rail.

For the eye piece cover I like to position it so that it opens to the 10 o'clock position. It's generally out of the way of my ball cap and I can still see the elevation settings.

Re: positioning of Butler Creek scope lens covers

I keep the objective to the 3, get's it out of the way, and lets me open it with the thumb of my left hand. I could use my thumb the same way with the cap opening to the 12, but then there'd be a big eyepatch in my way when looking over the rifle. I keep the eyepiece to the 10, gets it out of the way of the elevation turret, but without going so low as to interfere with the bolt handle.

Thanks for the replies.

Just didn't know if there was a general rule-of-thumb.

I can understand how the position of the cap on the rear ocular is based primarily on user preference, but earlier today, I stumbled upon perhaps good evidence on why the cap on the front objective should not open upwards to 12 o'clock.

I snapped a pic on a recent build, and came to a realization when viewing the pic on my computer. Ignoring the shiney stainless barrel, the scope cap sticks out like a sore thumb, as it seems to reflect light from the sky to ground level.

Take a look:

Maybe it was just a freak camera angle; I dunno...

I suppose some matte non-reflective paint could be applied to the inside of the cap if that position is desireable.

Anyway, thanks again for the replies. Very much appreciated.

never thought of it opening down in the front to have it out of the way, not that ive ever had a lens cap catch on a branch, but not a bad idea
