Possible summer with USMC rifle team...

I recently competed in the division matches just to shoot, have a good time, and get my mind off of my medical ailments. I never thought I'd shoot well enough to win a medal let alone be invited to shoot with the Marine Corps shooting team this summer. I figured I'd shoot above average but I really surprised myself. Plus, this was my first shooting competition ever, so I'm pretty stoked about doing well. I didn't even shoot as well as I think I should've, but I was constantly seeking knowledge and trying to improve. I think that is why the team noticed and invited me this summer. There really isn't any other reason for them to pick me since I wasn't the best shooter there.

Anyway my dilemma is that I need hip surgery, I want to shoot more than I want be healthy, and I need to extend to shoot this summer. I am going to finish submitting my 1yr extension package tomorrow so I'm hoping for the best. Times like these make me wish I could just wash a few cars and mow a few lawns to get my extension. Getting a million signatures and then still not having a definitive answer is not any fun at all. I'll be stuck on med hold past my EAS this summer anyway so I might as well be learning from the best and loving life. I don't mind being broken if I'm following a dream. The fact that the Corps is downsizing doesn't give me too much hope but I'm going to try anyway. I just want to shoot all summer with the rifle team and not get screwed by the big green weenie.

Ok I'm done venting.

DO IT.

Glory is forever -- get the hip fixed on duty after the shooting season ends in August. VA will follow-up after EAS.

Nobody offered before, and the chances of lighting striking twice are few. You have been offered the opportunity to be one of the few -- even within the Marines.

Aim straight and hold hard. Congratulations!

Sinister is correct. Shooting with the Team is an honor and a privilege. Trust me, if they invited you to shoot they see something in you that you may not recognize. Get the surgery later, suck it up and do your best for the Team and yourself. Precious few get the invite. Shooting with that caliber of Marines will teach you more than just marksmanship skills. You'll learn more about yourself than you can imagine, not to mention the friends you'll have for life.

Go for it.

I shot across the country for the Guard for several years. Besides the coaches on your team and team members you'll pick up a lot from others as well.

You'll meet new friends and contacts you will have forever.
