Post your 28" Heavy barrel short action rifles!

Re: Post your 28" Heavy barrel short action rifles!

Not proper hide material, I know. But my guess is there won't be a lot of 28 inch short action guys on here. So here is a 22-250 Ackley. 28 inch 1.25 straight contour barrel. Gun is long gone, as I don't shoot BR anymore.

Go Hawkeyes!

I have a 338 ready to drop in a tube chassis. Just have to get up the gumption to do it. I'd love to see the pics.

Thats good looking. Mine will be bead blasted as well

Re: Post your 28" Heavy barrel short action rifles!

I wonder if a 30" MTU contour would be too much stress on a short action. Basically I am wanting to watch bullet impact at all ranges. Hence the lead injection on the A5 as well. With a 22 250, is the 30" barrel worth the extra velocity or does it start diminishing?

Longest I went with the 22-250 Ack was 28 and the velocities were spectacular. One of only two rifles I've ever owned that went past 4k FPS. It also convinced me that I'd never reach 5000 FPS, ever.

I did have a 30 inch 6mmbr in a HV contour on a Stiller. Again, a fun rifle, but a bitch to find a case for and I gained very little over a 28 inch.

ETA: The other 4k+ fps rifle I had was also a 30 inch barrel. But it burned a lot more powder and was a 30 cal. Barrel life was nonexistent.

Surgeon 591 action with Bartlein 5R barrel...28" and 1" at muzzle. Caliber is 6XC.

Re: Post your 28" Heavy barrel short action rifles!

Brand,
Good info thanks. I'll probably stick to a 28" then for my '250 AI. Ill be shooting 75g amaxs so im hoping 34-3500 fps will be achieved.

Re: Post your 28" Heavy barrel short action rifles!

I'll see if I can't dig up some 22-250 AI load data for you.n You should achieve that from a 28 inch high quality tube.

If I remember right, I was using 4831SC at the time. Also was used in my 300 Ackley. I know it seems like a slow choice for the light bullets, but that is where I got the velocity on the long tube with such an overbored case.

Let me see and I'll PM you if I find it.

</div></div> Did you have to shoot that in heavy gun or did it make light gun weight?

I had a 22/250AI 1in8 28.5in back in '98... shot the 80g at 3250 with RE19 and RE22... seemed to be max abuse on the action and brass. Near zero recoil @ 16.5lb w/scope, bipod etc. Had a shoulder injury and wanted a low recoil long range rifle.
I may have some data around if you need...there was zero available back then.

Work on your technique, I shoot .308 175's and 178's out of a 20" barrel and after a friend sat me down and went over my recoil management technique I am watching my bullet impacts at 200 yards and am close to watching them at 100 yards. Some quality instruction will serve you better than upgrading equipment. You are in AZ, there are some damn fine shooters at Ben Avery so get to know them and learn from them.

Come to the LRPRS matches at Phoenix Rod and Gun Club-you'll see a few.

Re: Post your 28" Heavy barrel short action rifles!

Don't have a picture of my newly rebarreled 26" M24/M40 contour barreled .308 yet but here's my same profile 27" .243 and MTU profile 28" 6.5 Creedmoor.

Not everyone thinks 16" barrels are cool.

I think it was 27" plus brake, I can't remember if it was 28" or 27".... That's my old .243, I sold it to build a new one on a M2008. The new one is 28" plus brake.
