I have been looking at stocks to upgrade the pos hogue on my 700 tactical .223, and while the aics looks great, I can't justify it at the moment. BUT a 2nd hand 700 bdl deluxe walnut stock is for sale at a reasonable price. Would I be best upgrading to that now and save for the aics in the future? Anyone else have a walnut stock on a 'tactical' rifle?

I just really want something now caus the accuracy atm is 1-1.5 inches and I was really hoping for a bit better... besides, this stock looks saweet.

Re: posWalnut stocks on tactical rifles?

Have you looked into a Manners stock? I have a SPS Tactical .223 like yours sitting in a MCS T5-A with the mini chassis that's shoots EXTREMELY well. They often have some stocks ready to ship if you can't wait for a custom ordered one. There are many options that affect the price, but most would be under what an AICS goes for. I know that they also ship to the land down under.

Re: posWalnut stocks on tactical rifles?

I'm partial to wood/walnut/laminated stocks on most rifles myself. Anyone can pour fiberglass or carbon into a mold, do some body work and end up with a nice stock. Not too many can turn your average tree branch into a nice stock.

Re: posWalnut stocks on tactical rifles?

Not true at all. Obviously you have not seen what it takes to produce a fiberglass/ carbon fiber stock or a nice wood one for that matter. I'm a fan of classic wood stocks too, but your statement is full if ignorance.

Re: posWalnut stocks on tactical rifles?

I own an HS Precision Stock and a McMillan stock as well as many wood stocks. I like them all, but am partial to the craftsmanship required to make a really nice wood stock. Blems are not as easy to cover up when manufacturing wood stocks. With glass stocks you can do some body work and paint, not so easy to do with a finely crafted wood stock, that's all I'm saying. And I'm not talking about factory wood stocks, I'm talking customs. They all have their place in my safe, no doubt about it.

Re: posWalnut stocks on tactical rifles?

I think a lot of it is what you are planning on doing with the rifle. If you plan on going to the range once a month and shooting from a bag, then a wooden stock would be great. If you plan on beating the shit out of it like I do most of mine, then I would not sport a wooden stock. But dang are they pretty, I love the look of them, kinda makes me think of the older generation of snipers, and how amazing they truly were!

If you're thinking of a wood stock and are on the fence over the decision, perhaps some of these pics might sway you toward the wood stock:

These are some absolutely amazing stocks...made from wood. Not saying I'd want every rifle in my safe to be stocked with wood, but I've got one in the works with Joel and it's going to be absolutely sweet.

I would go walnut over plastic or cheap composite every time. If you're going to go composite go to the upper end.

Re: posWalnut stocks on tactical rifles?

I like the classic look of walnut, as long as you're not planning on long dips in the water, extended stays in the rain or beating down doors and the like it will do fine. Bed it, ideally pillar bed it, free float but fully bed the channel for stability, better still inlet the channel and drop some aluminum stock into the inlet for more ridgidity/stability.
If you want to abuse it, or use it in extreme conditions look into B&C they are affordable, good quality, and appear to hold value fairy well.
