I just recently got back in to handloading. I have noticed that both currently and in previous years, I always seem to try Hodgdon powders first.

I doubt there will be any educational value to this, but because I'm curious I will ask...

Is there a certain brand of powder that you always look to first, and if so, which brand is it? If you have a reason "why" please share.

Thanks.

Re: Powder brands?

I love Hodgdon powders and have used them for years. I like their Extreme line as they are very temp insensitive and produce very accurate ammo for me. Varget in the .308, H4350 in the .243 and 6.5 Creedmoor and H1000 in the 300WM.

Re: Powder brands?

My first powder choice is what ever seems to produce the highest velociy for my cartridge and bullet weight. Why should we pay the book makers to give us their expert suggestions if we are going to over-rule them with a brand choice?

Re: Powder brands?

Depending on the cartridge and the data available, I start with either VV or Hodgdon. The Hodgdon powders are consistent in terms of temp sensitivity but can be a mixed bag in terms of clean burning and optimum velocity while maintaining accuracy. I have had very good luck with the 500 series powders from VV. They are pricey but I have often found them to offer 'the best of all worlds' in terms of accuracy, velocity and consistency over temp range.
