Ok I’m using the rcbs chargemaster for my powder charges. I have been having issues with loads that shoot good in the past not shooting as good and the sd and es aren’t very consistent. It seems like when the sds and es are consistent and low the groups aren’t very good, when the groups are good the es and sds are bigger like up to 50-100 FPS between shoots. I was talking to a guy that said the automatic powder chargers aren’t very accurate or consistent for precision loading is there any truth to this?

I don't even know how many thousands of rounds I've loaded for my precision rifles on a Chargemaster and all the ammo was extremely accurate. Typically SD under 10 and ES under 20. Now, is it as precise as my A&D FX120i? No, but the Chargemaster resolution is only 0.1 grain, while the FX gets down to 0.02. If you've identified your optimal powder charge, be it by ladder, OCW, whatever, the minor differences between your Chargemaster's thrown charges shouldn't play THAT huge a factor. I know the window for 42.0 is fairly wide, like 41.95 to 42.0-something, but not 50 to 100 fps different. I'd look at other causes, like how you're setting your neck tension, using consistent brass, consistent resizing, etc

I use a relatively simple reloading/brass prep process. which includes loading on a chargemaster lite.

my SDs are always sub 5fps (usually 1.5-3 fps) consistently for my match loads.

i would really evaluate your whole reloading process, then also check any "drafty" conditions or electronic interference issues.

do you have a buddy with a scale you can double check your charges against?

I’ve charged thousands of precision rounds with my Chargemaster. I am running the straw hack in my spout (McD’s fit wonderfully) and have modified the program to speed up charging (RCBS customer support has a document they will email). Finally, when loading my match ammo, I validate accuracy of the scale every 20 or so using a check weight set. Find your optimal charge weight and +/- a tenth shouldn’t matter as that’s within the precision of the unit.
