powder for 284

I just got my first precision rifle and it is a 284. I am about to start working a load up for it but i am not sure which powder will yeild the best results. I will be loading at mag length, the rifle is a SA with a 36" barrel. I am thinking of useing the 162 Amax and 168 berger vld match hunting bullets. Couldnt find too much info on the 284 here with the search but what i did find looks like people where either using h4831sc? or reloader 15. this will be for hunting and target shooting so i want a powder that is not so temp sensitive, and im not sure which would be the better choice.

Ooops forgot to add that my brother has run both straight .284 and .284 Improved. Both run the best for him (meaning most accurate and tightest load -as far as ES and SD) with H4831SC. He has not tried RL-17.

I was wondering about the barrel as well. 36" doesn't seem like a very handy hunting rifle.
Regardless, h4831sc is a great starting point.

36" and a good strong taper and you could go captain caveman on the critter if you needed to

My favorite .284 powder is H4831SC. I have also had good results with RL22, RL17 & H4350. While all these powders show good groups from 400 yards & closer. The best groups over 1 1/2yrs. at 1,000 yards has been H4831SC.

just noticed that. No it doesnt have a 36 that was a typo it is a 26".

thanks for all the info looks like i will be trying out 4831sc to work up some loads. I ordered a redding die from the group buy so it will be a little bit till i can get the other die and componets to reload some.

I always liked H-450 but they don't sell it anymore. Aye, it was a bit temp sensitive but my rifles loved it. I'll have to look for something else when this last ~4 lbs is gone.

How does the velocity with 180gr bullets and 4831SC compare to RL17? People claim to get 2950fps with those bullets and RL17 out of 30-32" barrels.
