I am currently using IMR 4064 for my AR reloads and the lee perfect powder measure, since I don't have the time or desire to trickle and weigh each round. Problem is the powder measure isn't doing that well with metering the charge. I am looking for suggestions on alt. powders that would work well with the measure and still acheive similar results. BTW I am loading 69 gr. SMKS with a 22.5 gr. charge of IMR 4064 currently.

Re: Powder measure for .223...

Winchester 748 might throw more consistently. It's worked for me out of the same measure. So did Imr4895. I still wasn't happy until I got a harrells and a rcbs chargemaster.
With the lee I tapped reservoir twice threw the load tapped twice with lever down moved lever up tapped twice, well you get the idea. I love Imr4064 & 4895. Win 748 too for my gas rifles.4064 is a bit long and 748 is ball powder much smaller and will meter smoother.

2clicks - is that load for a carbine or rifle length barrel? Also does the IMR 4895 meter more smoothly because it is a ball type powder or just a shorter extruded powder than the 4064. Thanks...

Re: Powder measure for .223...

I use the Lee perfet powder as you mentioned. I am useing Varget and RL15.
The only adjustment I ever made was to set the charge bar at the desiered weight +/- .2. I put a shot glass and literally emptied out the reservoir. by doing this all the internals get a coating of powder (almost like lube). ever since I did that i get pretty consistant charge weights.
Are you loading for plinking or paper punching.
Either way don't give up on the system, but keep looking for a powder to suit your needs

Re: Powder measure for .223...

I run Varget through the perfect powder measure for .223, .308, and .30-06, and it runs great. If i remember somewhere in the instructions it does say to run 2 full hoppers of powder through the system and then adjust it one everything is coated internally. If you want a better metering powder for the .223 i'd recommend Ramshot TAC.
