Harrell premium, Harrell 90, Redding 3br or Redding lr-1000? I load up go 338lm. I mostly use varget, rl-15, retumbo, h1000, h4831sc and bl(c)2. Been using Lyman dps 1200 2 auto scale exclusively. Looking to speed up the process and for good consistency. Thanks.

Re: powder measure

Well, they are all volume measures so there won't be any consistantly 'precision' weights dropped from any of them and the coarser the powder the less consistant they will be.

Buy what you like but if you try loading for your big case with a manual small capacity BR measure I suspect you're going to be really disappointed.

Re: powder measure

wvlapua,

All the measures you mentioned are good ones, and any of them should give you good service. One trick that works well with very large charge weights is to set the measure at about half the desired charge weight and use two throws to bring it up to weight. Or three, for that matter. That said, most competitive shooters weigh charges for loads used at 600 yards and beyond. No problem using thrown charges at the shorter lines, but mid and long range loads are best weighed. The method of setting the scale a bit below the target weight and trickling the last few tenths is pretty much standard, and is probably the fastest and most efficient way to do this. But any of these measures will do a good job for you, so long as you're consistent in how you operate the throw. That's the key to any powder measure.

Re: powder measure

"Maybe I should just dip and trickle."

That's a rational option but any common measure's dropped charges and trickled up on a beam scale works great for most of us.

Redding's measures come with a good 'micrometer' adjustment thimble that others charge you extra for.

Re: powder measure

I wouldn't trade my Harrell premium. Great accuracy with all but the largest-grain stick powders and excellent repeatability. My largest charge is 54+ grains of RL-22, so I can't comment on charges for the .338, etc.

I'm sure the other measures also would provide excellent service.
