I'm wondering if anyone can estimate what would be a pratical grouping size (MOA) of a 5 shot group from a 16" noveske stainless barrel at 500 yards with 4x magnification (reticle thickness would be .5 moa) on an area shiloutte? as well as what MOA does anyone think that setup (not me) is fully capable of under those same conditions/variables

If anyone can speak from experience with a similar setup (as long as it 4x mag. at 500 yds) and let me know what size groups they got that would be great.

thanks

Re: pratical MOA for 16" SS at 500 yds w/ 4x mag.

You should be able to keep them all on an E target at 500 yards. Standard disclaimer about the gun, ammo, and trigger tension nut apply.

.5 MOA at 500 yds is 2.6175", a$$uMEing that the rifle is a 1 MOA stick you might get an 8" group. Better is possible and worse is likely.

Cheers,

Doc

I agree with doc on this one.

I have shot an AR-10 with a 16" Noveske barrel and a Trijicon ACOG TA01B that was 4x. At approx. 500 yards, I was able to get an average of 6 or 7 hits out of every 10 on 28"x8" steel poppers (8" center mass) of the 40 total rounds I fired. That was with 168gr SMK FGMM factory ammo. The rifle's owner was able to do slightly better.

I never shot the rifle on paper to determine accuracy in terms of MOA, but it was minute of deer/etc. at 500 with a 4x optic and an average shooter. I think the owner has said that the rifle is MOA or slightly better with his reloads, but again...I can't confirm that.

I would think that the barrel is capable of better accuracy depending on the platform it is mounted to, the ammo used, the shooter and the optics, etc., etc.
