I have a pre-64 Win model 70 in 30-06, that I was thinking of rebarrelling to a flatter shooting cartridge. Could you recommend a cartridge, and maybe a gunsmith that would do the work? I was thinking about maybe 6.5/06? Or should I stick with the stock barrel (are they considered cometition grade?) It would be used for informal target and steel to 600yds and beyond. Thanks!

Out to 600, the .30-06 with hand loads will suit you just fine. Being a pre-64 Model 70, some like myself deem those rifles collectors or too good to change. Personally, I hunt with my great grandfather's pre-64 model 70 in .270 that has 500 total rounds through the pipe and shoots .5 MOA with quality ammo.

If you want to modify it, my vote says .30-06 loads with 208 A-Max or go 6.5CM in a long action for better COAL and brass quality.

Just my .02
