Precision Rifles.....show em!!

Funny, I have that same cleaning vise. I bought mine maybe 25/30 years ago. It don't look like yours!

You must have been working it hard or it's 100 years old :)

308 mod 22 TRG 26” bbl, 8.5 x25 Mark 4 glass. Two groups about 5-7 years apart. Never had an animal outrun it

You know what, I'm thinking I got that gun vise maybe 35/40 years ago. I'll have to look up the name and see if I can find when they stopped selling them. Bought it local before mail order or internet sales became the norm.

I got it over 50 years ago and I have worked it hard.

I bought it from Don @ Dons Guns on Fredericksburg Rd in San Antonio about 1968.

I had a member refer me to a local vendor who does barrel jobs. On my $600 LH Ruger Hawkeye to install a plain stainless bbl $450 labor, $330 bbl,& if I want flutes $200. There’s a fact check with reality somewhere here. If a barrel cost more than a rifle , which is only a Hunting Rifle, it defies logic.

A good barrel will cost more than the cost of a standard factory hunting rifle.

Hawkeyes’ barrel must have a specific claw extractor cut, which adds time, which leads to cost. Flutes adds time, which leads to cost. The estimate you wrote is not abnormal.

Don’t even look at the cost of a quality carbon fiber barrel blank if you think steel is expensive.

I have not shot the rifle in many years, possibly when the weather cools off a bit here, I will load up some rounds and try it from the bench!
I still have all the reloading components and equipment around here somewhere.
If the groups are not too embarrassing, will post them.
I have only used the Gilkes-Ross in competition, never tried it from a bench.
20+ years ago, I was an active Service Rifle competitor, used an M1A built for me by Clint Fowler.
The younger guys all had AR’s and scored better, but I like the M1A, as I carried an M14 in the Army in the 60’s.
Switched to Match Rifle when I became too old and creaky for Service Rifle.
Thus Mike Ross built the Match gun for me.

Wow-you have an Anschutz trigger on that bad boy too?!?! I would love to put an Anschutz trigger on some of my guns...

But if you want a specific type Hunting Rifle, not a Competition or Specialty Item and you can purchase a new first quality rifle as cheap as a barrel job then there’s something wrong with that picture.

Another thing I noted they mentioned if I wanted my barrel crowned theirs an add’l charge. World I was reared in that’s part and parcel of a bbl job. I’ve been in business over 50 years and put up Elec Gates over 35 years, prices increased substantially but I’m still lucky to gross $350 out of a job and am married to it for a year on free warranty svc.

Did a lot of fiddling with various components and played chassis/scope musical chairs during COVID lockdown but I'm happy with how it turned out and I'm done for a while

Everything is additional money. Crown = money, fluting = money, finish = money, CRF cut = money. If you don’t like the price, just buy another rifle like you said.

What did you wrap your suppressor with?

Cammo Tape, not even sure where it came from. Whenever I see some in a shop I grab it. Very seldom I am in a gun shop anyway. None close to where I live.
edi

Do you have any trouble with heat from the suppressor affecting the tape?

Never had so far, it is never really hot in Ireland and to reduce heat haze I just pour water over the suppressor. The textile tape soaks up water and it cools very quick. I don't shoot PRS, a bit of longer range plinking and hunting meaning I don't have long shot strings.
