Guys, I have a new LMT Defender Carbine. I am wanting to get a precision upper for it and would like to hear opinions on which route is best. I would like to be able to shoot it out to 600.

I would like to stay with a 20" but would go longer is the accuracy is sufficiently better. I have a UBR stock on the way, so that will do. I am just looking for the upper. Will likely put a USO 1.8-10 on the upper.

I really like some of the stuff Wes at MSTN has, but am open to anything. Will probably look for something used to avoid the wait and I have a new Premier Double turn that I am going to try to trade. Hopefully I can compel someone to trade since the Premiers are pretty hot right now.

Lastly, do any of you guys shoot any 20" 556 SPR's routinely at 600 yards? What kind of accuracy is considered good at that range with an AR? 1moa? Better? Just want to have realistic expectations.

Re: Precision upper guidance

Longer barrel does not equal more accuracy, just more velocity (which can be a good thing if you're shooting long distances).

I've seen people shoot very, very good groups at 1k with 20" barrels, so I doubt you need to go any longer than you want. Check out White Oak Precision barrels, I like mine and they are well thought of. There's also Krieger, Shilen, and (IIRC) Hart making barrels for ARs which will be excellent.

Re: Precision upper guidance

I'm a parts chaser myself. for 25 to 600yds I'm putting together a 16in midlength carbine. the lower is done. I'm still piecing the upper together.

so far I have a RRA upper with the face trued to the bore. I'm planning on a barrel from superior barrels. their 1:8 twist lothar walther blank that comes with a fitted bolt, gas tube, low profile block, and is "hard blued" is at the top of my short list.

I'm also planning on a DD lite rail 10.0 and a US Optics SN4 1.5-6 set up in mil/mil is looking like the ticket for optics.

18-20" will do just fine out to 600. although some don't seem to have many problems at 600 with 16" barrels and 4x optics.

I tend to prefer the shortest possible barrel that'll go the distance. shorter barrels are stiffer.

Re: Precision upper guidance

I got my 18" WOA SPR barrel from ADCO. Its 1:7 with a Wylde chamber, and does just fine with 75gr Hornady's loaded mag length at 2700fps. I've shot 1 local precision rifle match so far and I did about the same I usually do with my boltgun (600 yd and in). Would have done better if my 500yd CBS on a LaRue wasn't about 10ft low (playing with your turrets at home not the range will be the topic of another tale), but the follow up shot was dead on and knocked it over fine (some concerns expressed pre match about the 223's and the LaRue).
I run an ST-10 on mine, the 1.8-10 would be definately a good choice.
I had an SN4S, but for me (more precision comps than run and gun) the ST10 was a no-brainer (Jpoint should be here Monday for close stuff).

Scott from TacticsLLC talks very highly of the Bartlien barrels as well.

White Oak Precision also builds complete uppers, you should check them out. They build a lot of uppers for NRA high-power shooters who require excellent accuracy out to 600 yards. The owner is a multi-time high-power champion and shoots his own uppers.

Re: Precision upper guidance

Thanks again. I am sure they are out of stock like everyone else. I am going to have to find a used one most likely. If anyone knows where I can find a used one to buy or trade for let me know. I have some good trade items.
