Rifle Scopes Premier 5-25x on .300WM

I am in the planning stages of a .300WM build to use in the 800yd+ range with occasional shots at 1 mile. I will be funding this build by selling several rifles I don't shoot, and one that will not needed when I complete the .300WM build. This rifle will be used in matches here in the southeast shooting steel almost always.

I have a couple questions though on optic selection.

1. I am running a NF 3.5-15x F1 on a different rifle now with great results, but I'd really like to pick up one of the top optics while I can afford it. Is the 5-25x magnification to much for shooting in the 800-1760yd range?

2. I am planning to get the Gen 2 XR reticle, but I would like to hear user feedback. How is this reticle for ranging, and holding over? Is the reticle big enough to be seen well in the 10x range? I normally shoot on 10x, so I'd like it to be usable at that magnification.

3. Zero stop, my NF has spoiled me. Does the premier have a zero stop, or is the double turn turret designed so that is not needed.

4. Are these badger rings correct for the premier? I am not having luck finding badgers in anything other than medium high for a 34mm tube.

Also, Badger makes a whole host of different height/style rings in 34mm. Check with Steve at Triad Tactical and he'll hook you up with what you need:

As for the "correct" height...that will depend largely on you, how you want the rifle set up, etc.

I think the op is wondering if you can readily/easily read the reticle subtensions at 10x.

In my opinion, not extremely well. They are awful small.

Overall, I really like the gen 2xr, but I wish it had .2 mrad subtensions on the outskirts of the reticle, kinda like the Bender P4F.

I find it difficult to accurately range with the gen 2xr.

Yeah, my question may not be exactly clear. I am wondering how easy it is to see the subtensions in the reticle at the lower power.

I was thinking the lack of .2 mil indicators was a slight drawback of the optic.

FWIW, the other optic I am considering is the NF F1 with mlr-2. I really think something in the 5-25 range would be beneficial and NF doesn't offer a FFP optic in that mag level.

I think you'll neuter the 300wm by using a 15x scope. I think 20x is about minimum for that cartridge. I know people have made do (mainly in the past) with little magnification, but it can really help you connect.

NF will be releasing a 5-25 FFP soon, by the way...

Why? I've shot to a 1600 yards with 16x optic and even managed a few hits.

Because, "it can really help you connect", like I stated before.

No, you don't have to have it, but it really is easier to hit things you can see.

My point is if your dead set about shooting at 10X...its a simple turn of the knob about a quarter turn to get down to that. The bottom is useless...far too fine at that point. Nothing a half second to do...so really its a non-issue.

If this is going onto a lightweight rifle of any type it should be noted this optic has quite a bit of heft to it.

My .308 pictured above loaded full with a 10rnd mag and heavy ass suppressor is 23lbs....you ain't doing nothing fast with it unless your in shape.

Fair enough on using the magnification as intended. I have found it's easier to range on higher power anyway.

I am really thinking I will be going with this optic. If any of you have any reason not to, please let me know.

I'm running the Premier 5-25 with Gen 2 XR on my 300WM. I feel it's the perfect match, and bought a second scope for another 300WM build.

As stated earlier, the reticle is pretty thin at low power, I only wish the dot's where about 1.5X larger, other then that it's a great scope.

If a higher magnification is available, then why not acquire it and remove one more variable from equation.

OP: I think the 5x25 will fit your needs perfectly, especially when looking to engage targets past 1500 yds.

I'd say you'll be very pleased with the upgrade. These scopes have great glass, very positive clicking turrets and an easy and robust zero stop. I've got one on my long range .308 and have another inbound for my .338 project that should be soon finished.

I'd say go for it!

I have read a lot of good about these scopes so I am really excited to get one for myself.

However, I have to move a couple of rifles I don't shoot anymore to make room for the new......

I think you'll find all that you've read...to be true. The only potential negative is the size and weight of the scope. This was mentioned by someone else. It doesn't bother me or affect my rigs. Just a large and robust scope with great German glass and great turrets / zero stops.

Hope this picture comes through...it shows a NightForce NXS sitting on top of the PH. You can see the size difference of the turrets and tube diameter.

Pic came through no prob.

Size and weight are lower on my side of worries. This is going to be a heavy rifle any way when all said and done. I like the idea of having an optic built like a tank on top.

You'll have a scope built like a tank...but still have very precise adjustments. I think you'll be more than happy!

You will be happy with the PH 5-25. Im using Seekins rings that I got from Scott at Liberty Optics. I think you will like the Gen II XR. It took me some getting to get comfy with but I love it now.

Another question I just thought of, is concerning a base to use.

Any one have experience with the larue Rem 700 base? I have always had great products from larue which is why I am interested in there 20 moa base.

Will the larue scope base work well with the 5-25 premier?

It should work fine with the Premier. Just make sure that you purchase rings with the correct height for your scope.

A mile with a 300winmag is really pushing it. My hot loads go subsonic at just over 1350yds. I can consistently hit a 14in plate at this distance with my 4.5-14x Leupold Mark 4. I think u can get by less mag if you get realistic about the limitations of the 300winmag, and the distances that it is meant for.

I just got the Premier 5-25 with GenII XR from CS Tactical, love it. I went with some 1.125 rings from Badger. MidwayUSA has a bunch of ring heights for Badger in 34mm, some of which are steel and others which are alloy. I bought both, ended going with steel, but I am sure alloy would be fine under .338 LM. I know they also had 1" and 1.2" in Badger, in stock.
