Gents, anyone have a pic of a PH 5-25 mounted on a LR-308 type with a PRS stock and a DD 12.0 forend. I really want the 3-15, but that will require the use of a spotting scope. With the 5-25 you pretty much allready have a spotting scope built in but looks huge compared to the 3-15. Thanks

Re: Premier Heritage 3-15 or 5-25

danrodder,

I don't have any pictures to share. But yes, the 5-25 PH is rather large.

A rifle scope is an "aiming device". A spotting scope is a "seeing" device. Trying to make one work as the other is usually a bad plan.

Buy the scope that's the best aiming device for your rifle, and your application.

And sometimes the best aiming device points you to towards the 3-15, and sometimes that points to the 5-25.

Given the difference in price get the 5-25 from LibertyOptics, if your in the DFW area, I'll let you look thru mine, its not mounted yet.

The price difference is not much and your getting an extra 10x just incase you need it.

Better to be safe than sorry.

Re: Premier Heritage 3-15 or 5-25

I would opt for the 5-25. The difference you are losing on the low end of magnification is only 2x versus gaining an additional 10x of magnification. If the 25 is too much, well its a variable power scope for a reason.

Re: Premier Heritage 3-15 or 5-25

When I was choosing my scope and had the same question - experienced snipers dissuaded me from higher magnification, suggesting that 15x is all I'd really need. And from professional point of view they're most likely right.

Still I chose to disregard their advice and went with a 5-20x scope (Razor HD).

Re: Premier Heritage 3-15 or 5-25

O.K., so no one has a pic.
I really like that 3-15 and when the mirage kicks in I always end up cranking down my TMR'd 6.5-20 Mk 4 and my MLR'd 5.5-22 NXS to 15X anyway. Plus I have a good spotting scope to see the bullet splashes when I'm sending them 700-1000 yds. I just wanted to see if the 5-25 PH does'nt look so freaking ugly because of it's size. If it looks good, I would go with it and leave the spotting scope at home. I appreciate the responses.

Re: Premier Heritage 3-15 or 5-25

I don't have one mounted on an ar as of yet but I have one on my ai if that helps any. It is large and the objective bell is big but it sure is a bad muther. I love mine. I thought about the 3x15 but ended up with the 5x25 because of the extra power. It is usually only useful in the early part of the morning when there is no mirage but I shoot alot at that time. If I wanted the power and didn't have it, I would probably be pissed because I could have bought it the first time around. By the way, did I say I loved it. Just bought an USO sun screen for it. Can't wait for that to get here. RG

Re: Premier Heritage 3-15 or 5-25

If it is going to go on a LR-308 do not go any bigger than a
3-15x. The 5-25x is simply too big and unwieldy on any AR15/AR10/AR clone. I have gone that route in the past.

My tactical competition rifle (GAP AR10) is running a S&B 3-12 PMII on it and performs very well out to 1000 yards. IMHO I would not want a scope any bigger on it, not even the 4-16 PMII which also jumps up in size. I often tell myself that it would be nice to have a scope that went up to 15 or 16 power on the AR10. But in all honesty and reality a scope larger than a 3-12x is not going to make me shoot smaller groups than I already am out to 1000.
And I am shooting my AR10 almost neck and neck with the bolt rifles with large magnification scopes when it comes to group sizes and scoring.

The AR15/AR10/AR clone rifles do not balance well with a big ass scope sitting on top of them. The big scopes are more manageable on a conventional, wider-bodied stocked rifle.
Not to be a smartass, but I would be more concerned about spending the time and money on ammunition learning how to drive your LR-308 than being concerned with high magnification. The big semi-auto's take a lot of practice to learn how to shoot competitively against the bolt rifles. A high magnification scope is not going to make you shoot any better.

Do not have a pic of a Premier scope on an AR but here is a pic of my 3-12 PMII on my AR10 with a Premier 5-25 in comparison. The Premier 3-15 is approx the same length as the 3-12 PMII
