I have read in other threads that the G34 makes a good PR handgun, and the STI 2011. But my question is, would I be at a large disadvantage with a Sig scorpion 1911 or equivalent with 10rnd mag for a PR competition with a handgun stage?

I don't shoot handguns very much but seeing as that the Snipers Hide Cup is happening in my back yard this year I better cowboy up and get prepared to shoot a handgun. This predicament obviously leaves me in a position to make a difficult choice, so any insight is appreciated. If there is already a topic on standard 1911 being used in PR matches I would appreciate a link as that I could not find it.

Thanks

I think ultimately if you are comfortable with the gun you have and can shoot it well you shouldnt be at a huge disadvantage. I am not sure the exact format the competition will follow and that might effect your weapon choice. 1911s tend to be very accurate guns with the disadvantage being the higher recoil of the .45acp and the lower mag capacity. The glock 34 is very accurate has a high magazine capacity 17+1 without a long stick mag and is extremely reliable with little in the way of controls to get in the way on the range also being chambered in 9mm it has significantly less recoil. That being said if you dont practice with it neither will do you much good!

Re: Presision rifle handgun

I was in the same predicament as you until just the other day. I have been a 1911 fan for a while and they have served me well in the past, but at last years Utah state shoot I found out quickly that it just was not sufficient for the stage designs. I just bought a sig tac ops in 9mm and can't wait to use in the next match. 20 round mag capacities are going to be alot better than my old 8 round capacity.
I do however have a sig scorpion that might be for sell if this tac ops works out!!

Re: Presision rifle handgun

I have used a 1911 in many precision rifle matches and did just as poorly with it as I do with a hicap 9mm. One match I shot only allowed 7 rounds in a mag, so the 1911 was right at home (though i do use 10 round mags). In most matches I have shot, your final placing would not be affected much, if at all, by using a standard 1911.

If you got it, run it.
