Today I tried a new load for a new never fired 700mlr 338 lapua. I tried Hogdon 4831sc for the 1st time working up to 80gr in 1gr steps. 79gr is max load in my book for the h4831, they do not list the sc. This seemed to leave a lot of room in the case which I didnt like. I am also using Lapua brass and weight sorted Win mag primers. I never did see any pressure signs. Has anyone else ever used H4831sc with the 300smk. Hopefully in a Remington 700mlr. I am worried about loading much hotter until I check velocities. I am thinking of going back to retumbo or trying another powder. I got the 4831sc because I could get a good buy on it and I haven't been able to get retumbo lately here

Just as a general rule, powder burns only on exposed surfaces. The more surface area, the faster it burns. Since you had sc in there it would have burned a touch quicker and could have caused your pressure signs. You can always try seating the bullet deeper in the case if you are hell bent on a charge weight. Otherwise, back it off a bit.

Sorry, I misread the post due to the title. I thought you already had them. The burn rate should be pretty close. If you start at the minimum load you should be alright.

Yeah I started at the minimum and went past the max load. The min was 71gr and max was 79gr. I went to 80gr with no change in manipulating the bolt signs on the primer or anything else I know to look for. The only other loads I load hot and for accuracy are 308 and 300wm and I always noticed some sort of signs of pressure letting me to stop and back down my charge a little.

I've had better luck with slower powder for 338LM. H1000 and Retumbo both work great.

I really like 4831SC for 260 Remington & 7mm WSM loads but have thought it to be a bit fast for 338LM.
