I'd like to hear from anyone who has experience with the PRI carbon forearm. I'm having an AR-10 built and I really prefer round handguards over the 4 rail guards. Also does anybody else make round forearms for an AR-10 type rifle.

First, before anyone gets too far into the recommendations...are you actually having an AR-10 built or are you having some other (like DPMS pattern 308 rifle) built??? Only the Armalite = AR-10. Everything else is what it is (i.e. - DPMS LR-308, POF P-308, KAC SR-25, etc.).

With that said...I run PRI handguards on a couple different ARs and I am building an AR-10 "Match Carbine" right now with a PRI setup. They are excellent products, but not cheap.

As for alternatives...

Can you clarify whether you mean and Armalite pattern or a DPMS/KAC pattern rifle? It makes a difference because the HGs are NOT compatible between the two platforms.

Re: PRI carbon forearm

I have a 17" JLZ upper from MSTN with the PRI handguard and I really like it. It is perfectly sized and feels good on my hands, but it does get hot. I don't think there is much in the way of alternatives, but I do know DPMS makes a carbon fiber forearm for its .308 rifles.

I'm not sure if This is for the AR-15 or AR 308, but hopefully it helps get you started in the right direction.

The other option is the JP Vtac here

Re: PRI carbon forearm

I have 4 of them

1) Spr mk12 mod 1

2) Gap Dpms LR 6.5 credmore

3) APA .308 being built now

4). 458 SOCOM

I think if you don't have to hang a bunch of shit on your forearm that there the way just for the weight savings.. I will see if I can shoot some photos of mine

Re: PRI carbon forearm

Your right I should have been more specific. I'm totally new to .308's. I'm sending a Mega MA-TEN reciever set to GAP when it arrives and have them build it. If I read the description correctly the MA-TEN will accept DPMS, Armalite, Knights compatable style hand guards.

If this is not correct please let me know but that is how I read it. I guess I call Mega to be sure.

Re: PRI carbon forearm

I like them however I don't own one. The ones I have handled on Mk12 type rifles make me want. With PRI here in Ohio I like supporting local companies as well.

So many parts so little money....

Nope...the MA-TEN uses KAC/DPMS/SR-25 handguards/barrel nuts ONLY.

Re: PRI carbon forearm

I'm so spoiled by having one. It's so much noticeably lighter than anything else in a rifle-length setup.

I don't burn through rounds to heat it up to the point of discomfort, but picking up railed ARs at gun shops make me miss the PRI's balance instantly.

Re: PRI carbon forearm

In terms of "round" handguards, you still have a good many options, including:

1) PRI;
2) DPMS;
3) JP Enterprises/Viking Tactics (VTAC);
4) Fulton Armory Titan.

I am sure there are others, but that gives you a start. I wholeheartedly recommend the PRI offerings. They are excellent if they are within your budget!

Re: PRI carbon forearm

Thanks alot for all the suggestions and educating me a little bit ORD. Now that I have opened this can of worms can somebody explain to me the difference in between the Armalite and the KAC/DPMS recievers as far as compatability of accessories.

If it's like, everything is different or a ton of shit don't worry about it I'll figure it out eventually. I'm usung the MA-TEN for sure so it's just for my own knowledge at this point.

Re: PRI carbon forearm

the thread pattern for the armalite barrel nut is different than the one for the DPMS. the rear radius of the upper on an armalite is different than the DPMS. the armalite is straight, the DPMS curved. there are more im sure, but these two come to mind. and the threads prevent compatability of accessories

There are some fundamental differences between the platforms, the largest of which are the magazines (you will need DPMS/KAC/Magpul LR20 PMAGS/C-Products mags). The handguards/barrel nuts are different, barrel extensions, bolt catches, take-down pins, gas tubes, etc. Since you are building out on a MA-TEN, just stick to "DPMS/KAC" compatible parts and you should be fine.
