THIS IS NOT A FOR SALE THREAD......

A guy i work with asked me if i was interested in buying a rifle from him...
He stated the rifle is a Remington 700 m40 in .308 that he bought in 1968.....
He stated he is the original owner and the rifle has about 150 rounds through it. He currently had the gun in a H&S stock he bought years ago. He still has the original wood stock. never had the barrel off, never had any work done to the action or trigger . He HAS maintained the gun in excellent condition.

He states that because the rifle is a "true" M40 it is worth $2000 "as is"

1. my limited understanding is that a true M40 would not have been sold to a civilian...He stated he custom ordered the rifle from Remington with instructions to make it exactly like a USMC M40(so admitedly, its not a military gun, but a factory copy of what was being made for the usmc)
2. the big question...... is it worth $2000?

Re: price check on isle m40

First off I will say he is 'full of shit' and adding misinformation to justify his misinformed asking price!!! How can it be "a factory gun" but still an M40?? The "M40" was made for the USMC and no one else sooooo It tain't an M40 unless it came from the Corps inventory!

My guess is he has one of the first 700P's(parkerized with non checkered wood stock made for LE in the mid to late 80's-after a couple years they went to the HS stocks-24" barrel vs. the 26" on later versions). They look near identical to the first M40's except for raised portion on stock around safety lever and a sloped rearward forend tip vs. a rounded tip on the M40 and a plastic butt plate vs aluminum-also swivel studs and not those with a built in loop).

If it has a C prefix before SN that is what it is. Value in good shape because there aren't many floating around about $1K tops unless someone is desperate for one! Made in 223 also but 308 was/is the most popular sold.

Re: price check on isle m40

ill see if he will bring it to work next week and I'll snap detailed pics of it. we're the commemorative rifles produced in the late 1960's? He is a fellow LE officer so i don't question his honesty, just his terminology. I'm sure it's a great gun, just not a $2000 gun...:)

Re: price check on isle m40

I’ll add my 2 cents:
Most probably a 700, PSS, (available in .308/223 caliber), 24 inch “Varmint Contour” barrel length with Remington “Safety warning” on side of the barrel. Flat crown, Single sear, round type safety. Parkerized finish, (some dark gray, some a silver gray) action and barrel. Came with a non-checkered Monte Carlo cheek piece, wooden stock. “C” series serial number, No clip slot nor two small screws in the rear receiver left side for mounting iron adjustable sight. These were only available to Law-enforcement by Remington in the beginning of sales. Plain old black (cast aluminum) BDL floor plate/trigger guard. They do make a nice almost M40 ish copy. I have several and they are very accurate to shoot.

But not the Real McCoy. Gutowsky

Just thinking: You must “Check it out!”
I thought the same thing several weeks ago and Dammed if it wasn’t “The Real McCoy!”
Never assume!

This was my first thought. Definitely could have been mistaken. 40x and M40 have been mistaken by several of my (somewhat knowledgeable) Law Enforcement shooting friends when talking about old model 700s. I've even been privy to an argument about the difference, or suposed lack of difference between the two.

Re: price check on isle m40

Dude, I know who you are talking about.... It's a repro he purchased at a local (beat 6) dealer in 2007ish... The stock was purchased and put on about two or three years ago.. text me and I will give you more info privately...

I'm not trying to call him out, but you should confirm his story again, one more time.
