I spent over $1k a few years ago on a scope and it got me out to 1k yards with .308. I read a lot and in the end, I wanted to minimize the risk of getting a dud and having to start over. I'm now seeing <$250 scopes with lifetime warranty that a reviewer says:
hitting steal at 1000 yards with no problems

Specs are good too at 8-32x44.

So have new entrants made this a much more competitive field or was it overkill to spend 3, 4, 500, 100+ for a scope?

What are we getting at each price level?
IE $300: [ feature / quality that isn't there at cheaper prices ]
$500: [ feature / quality that isn't there at cheaper prices ]
$750: [ feature / quality that isn't there at cheaper prices ]
$1,000: [ feature / quality that isn't there at cheaper prices ]
$1,500: [ feature / quality that isn't there at cheaper prices ]
$2,000: [ feature / quality that isn't there at cheaper prices ]
$2,500+: [ feature / quality that isn't there at cheaper prices ]

That is for you to decide. I have 2 of the Mueller 8-32 I use on .22 training rifles. I will use one now and then to do load development/accuracy/precision testing on a new rifle until I know what scope I am going to put on it but that is really only use out to 100 yards. I don't remember there being that much travel and 1/8 clicks would be a pain for dialing out. When it comes to buying scopes everyone has a budget and you need to stay within it. $500-$1000 for a scope is a lot of money to most people. I have tried the full range from $150-$2500, and have scopes for specific use, some do it better than others, and some it does not matter.

The good news is, right now in this hobby we have a lot of competition and great products to choose from that fits everyones budget.

There are objective measures though that would be useful to list out. IE I've heard cheap scopes in the past couldn't hold zero. But if these Muellers are doing fine taking 6.5CM to 1k yards, then it's notable. Yours has 1/8 MRAD clicks? That's strange. By lack of travel you mean the total number of MRADs you can dial? What were the biggest differences you felt between the Mueller and $1k+ scopes?
