Primer difference?

I found a few small rifle Remington primers labeled 6 1/2's, but all the load data I have found using Rem primers states the use of 7 1/2's.
My question is, what difference is there if any? Duke.

Re: Primer difference?

The 6 1/2's are for "small" low pressure ammo...22 Hornet,218,etc. They can be used for .223 in a BOLT gun only as they are a soft primer. If used in a rifle with a floating firing pin (AR-15,etc.) there is a chance of slam fire.

Take care,Stan

Re: Primer difference?

Umm thats not quite right. 6 1/2's are standard small rifle primers, 7 1/2's are small rifle benchrest (match) primers. Benchrest primers are supposed to be more consistent.

Sort of lime Federal 205 (standard) and 205M (match)
