So i just primed 100 9mm cases using a rcbs hand primer. well i always do batched of 100. when i was done i had 1 primer left in the tray. thinking that was rather odd i mentioned it to my wife. she then tells me when i got up to use the bathroom she found the one i dropped earlier on the floor and she put it in the tray. well thats great except earlier i was using small rifle primers for my .223. so do i need to junk all of these cases since there is no way to know which one has the rifle primer or will it not me dangerous?

.......it would be wrong to trade in the wife, she could be useful for other housefrau duties....
i would just make sure that i fired all that loaded ammo in a fully supported barrel.

You can also fire the primers off one at a time until you hear the one odd ball primer in the bunch. Then you'll know you found the rifle primer and can just restart the reloading of the fired cases. That is if you can hear the difference in them. Not sure if you can but it seems like you would be able to.

I just want to make sure that it will be safe to fire. Ill be shooting using an M&P 9mm. Like I said its just the one round so I'm not concerened with repeated abuse on the gun, but I have no idea what type of preasure spike this will cause.

I'm not sure what the pressure spike would be either. I would fill safier to waste the 100 primer than damage myself or the gun. But your right it'll more than likly not hurt anything, but remember your setting off a small explosion in your hand.

What load are you using? If you are planning to load the top end high pressure load, I wouldn't use them. If a light practice load, I would. JMHO

why not just press them out to find the one primer.pressing them out is OK to do if you use just enough pressure to remove the primer.or have you already charged them and seatted a bullet.

Aren't Federal primers color coded? I think they are and just for this kind of thing.

Nothing has been charged yet. Me being cheap with the cost of primers these days and how hard it is to find them at times I was hoping not to waste 100 of them. If its just going to throw a flyer I don't care. But I'm not the type to risk my gun, hands or eyes over it either. I load conservative loads. Right now 5.5-5.7 grains of power pistol over 124g fmj. I remember seeing a post at some point where a guy was asking if he could substitute small rifle for small pistol primers. Obviously that's not what I'm doing, just wondering if its a risk or if its about the same loade as a small magnum pistol primer?

Usually SR primers have a thicker cup than SP primers and you might be able to look into the case with a magnifying glass and see the difference. Also, the coatings on the inside of the primers often are a different color, especially if the same brand. There is no difinitive way to determine if the SR primer will cause enough of a pressure increase to actually result in a bad event. You might have someone with Quickload put your recipe in with the SR primer (if Quickload will) and see what the estimated pressure is. Disclaimer-that's no guarantee, just an idea.

Sorry, Quickload won't work. Readings based on an average "mild" primer, you can't determine a specific primer to use. I haven't used it in a while.
