Primer Pocket Question??..

I have the RCBS case prep center, when using the primer pocket cutter/chamfer bit how deep should I be cutting the primer pockets out to square them up for a good primer seating? I've heard different things...

I can't find any info online about this either. I've experimented... I've taken out just a hair where its squared up, and I have taken a few pieces cut out all the way down to where the end of the case stops on the black flat surface of this cutter bit (bottom right bit in photo) It didnt go through the case, it had brass left in the flash hole still, I test fired them and actually had better results cutting it out all the way down. I just wanted to clear this up for me before I start working on all my lapua brass.

I use a lyman tool and I Just cut until it bottoms out

I have a uniformer with instructions which states LR depth should not exceed .130". SR, LP & SP should not exceed .120".

SAMMI should have specs on this also... One of my books says SR = .123 max, .117 min and LR = .132 max, .125 min. (don't quote me on this)

Usually the uniformer bit comes out of the bag/box set at the proper depth. I've never loosened the setscrews and they work fine.

I use a Simclair cutter, and you cut till it bottoms out. I can't imagine a manufacturer making a tool that will cut deeper than spec. I guess if you punch clean through, you went too far!

Primer pockets...?

I decap and seat new primers. Period.

If you do buy the RCBS primer pocket uniform tool, be aware it is adjustable, it's preset from the factory and can loosen up and move, mine moved up cutting more than needed. Not sure of other brands that will fit the unit.
It's a useful tool, after uniforming it can be used to clean pockets, just taking the crud. I chamfer each time, so having it setup, it's just a quick easy step, so I do it.
