Primer pocket uniforming 5.56

Re: Primer pocket uniforming 5.56

You ask: "Does anybody use a primer pocket uni-former"....
You must know that it is a common practice, for 5.56 and virtually every other cartridge in use today. And, you wonder why?

I use one for every cartridge, not just 5.56 or 223Remington. The reason as is suggested by the description of the tool; to UNIFORM the primer pockets so that the distance to the flash hole is consistent. The other consideration is that the primer is seated below flush, which can be difficult without considerable pressure, on some brass.

I highly recommend it. BB

Re: Primer pocket uniforming 5.56

It also squares up the bottom corners of the pockets, which allows the primers to all seat consistently, which in turn promotes consistent ignition. It's not one of those things that will instantly improve your groups but it helps eliminate flyers caused by an irregular ignition. Eliminating all the possible sources of inconsistency is the name of the game.

Re: Primer pocket uniforming 5.56

you have to use one, most .223 brass will have some kind of crimp ( PMC WCC LC) , if you dont correct the pocket with a swage tool or primer pocket uniformer you will bugger up primers when you try to seat them.

if you are using a high quality brass you might not "need" to do it.

Re: Primer pocket uniforming 5.56

Maybe I'm hallucinating, but seems like the high dollar and beefy Lapua brass is most in need of primer pocket uniformity? BB
