Primer quetion for use in a M1A

Re: Primer quetion for use in a M1A

A properly seated primer should never slam fire unless the pocket is too loose allowing it to move out. I probably fired 3000+ rounds in real M-1s over the past 40 years loaded with every brand of primer and never had a slam fire nor saw one in all the matches I participated in. What does SA say about slam fires? I suspect a firing pin that is hanging up.

Re: Primer quetion for use in a M1A

Im not having any slam fires, I am just trying to avoid it the best I can. I was told the CCI 34 primers are what the military uses in the M14 because it is tougher than others and helps prevent slam fires. So, Im looking for other brands that are known the be tough for the same purpose.

Re: Primer quetion for use in a M1A

The CCI # 34 is THE specified primer for 7.62x51 and .30-06 gov't loadings. I would suspect that others are not making a primer cup that is as tough as the #34 because it is not the design parameter. In other words, if it doesn't need to be that strong, it would be a waste of money to do so. Just stick with the # 34's to be on the safe side. The weapons in question HAVE slam fired and caused injury. Primers are cheaper than the ER. I am under the impression the CCI #34 is the same as the CCI 200 as far as relative power goes.

Re: Primer quetion for use in a M1A

Guess I'll stay away from M-1A rifles. Never had these problems with my Winchester M-1 nor any of my ARs.

BTW the type 34 primer was developed as the military has full auto weapons. Same reason they crimp them and the bullets too.

If M-1As had a regular slam fire problem the attorneys would be lined up 10 deep to sue, so absent any published data.... well, how do you say "urban legend".

Re: Primer quetion for use in a M1A

Been shooting the M1A platform for years.
Don't want a 'slam fire', then learn to hold the trigger fully rearward during the recoil cycle.
Those slam fires are largly trigger finger bounce. Firing pin is just too light for recoil induced ignition. Weigh an M1A pin and an AR15 free float pin. You might quit shooting the AR platform.

Use any primer you like., I've run,CCI, Rem, Win, Fed 210, 210m with no ill result. Personal pref is WLR and clean primer pockets.

Read these first two articles ( actually,...save them to your computer) Glen Zedikers excellent M14/M1A reloading articles. Those two articles will answer a TON of questions.

Re: Primer quetion for use in a M1A

I too have been shooting and reloading for the M1A and M1 for the last 20 years. I use Winchester primers and never had a slamfire either.

I for one am glad, the OP wasn't sure, so he asked "us". Better safe then sorry n' ya gotta learn somehow!

Re: Primer quetion for use in a M1A

Many that post about slam fires in a M1A normaly get all their info from the internet, so here is some real world none B/S about M14s I've learned from 1964 todate.

I don't know much about a M1A or a Real M14, because I've only worn out 17 barrels, on my own uncut H&R M14e2. I had to rebarrel My old TRW XM21, yes Real Deal TRW XM21 once. The POS Winchester I had only had 5 barrels so it won't really count I guess, but it was a reweld if that makes a diff to you.

I never stayed in a Holiday Inn Express where M14's or clone info, was the main topic.
But I will leave you with this.

High primers, an broken or stuck firing pins, have caused Every slam fire I've ever been ask to look at. Those that say the bolt, or hammer following will cause it, need to explain to me how the hammer got by the safety bridge with enough following force to cause a slam fire. OBTW, that was proven B/S during testing in 1956-57.

Now granted there are many makers of M14 Clones that only care about getting the shit out the door an banking your bucks. I've tried to make my shit slam fire (even to the point of useing pistol primers)
and have, but not if the weapon an ammo was in proper order, or even close to built specs. YMMV

Edit to add,..Come to think about it Sgt Rose, we never got that last issue settled, where you called me a Route Step Fucker. We need to revisit that when we meet again.
