Im new to to reloading in general. I'm wanting to reload for accuracy more so than economy. What effect if any do primers have on accuracy. I'm reloading for .223 and am specifically wondering about standard cci small rifle v/s remington 7 1/2 benchrest primers?

Re: Primers?

I've never been able to tell a practical difference, but I don't shoot benchrest, and rarely shoot for groups. I run Tula 7.62 in my 308 and 260, and wolf small rifle in my 223ai.

Re: Primers?

Primers might be the least critical component, but you can't switch indiscriminately. The intensity of the charge could make a slow powder a little faster, or visa versa. Personally, I buy Federal primers almost exclusively except for two rifles chambered the same and I keep the loaded ammo separated by using hollow points and Federal 210M in one and VMax and Remington primers in the other. That way, it's a visual I.D. no matter which end I'm looking at. (Remington primers are the only one's that are brass color)

I have never seen Wolf primers? If it is anything like Wolf ammo, I'm skeptical. BB

edit: PS, I like your attitude. You will never SAVE money handloading, even if your time is worth nothing.

Re: Primers?

In my .308 I've observed certain powder/primer pairings to create group variances of up to .5MOA, for $4 for a hundred experimenting is affordable. My .223 is not a precision firearm so I couldn't speak to it.

Re: Primers?

There is a world of difference between primers. I use CCI primers almost exclusively and use Winchester for pistol. I used Federal a few years ago but found out that once a primer pocket has held a Federal nothing else fits tight again.
I use CCI 450 almost exclusively for my 223 loads and they also give me the best accuracy, even better than BR4.

Re: Primers?

i bought CCI when i started loading, havnt had a single fail to fire and not one leak. im pretty new at this so i am going to stick with what i know works.

oh and wolf makes primers?
