Prior Army SF Guys' Advice Needed

Re: Prior Army SF Guys' Advice Needed

My knowledge is dated, but what do you want to know? Be able to climb rope (using your legs so you don't burn your arms out) swim 50 yard in boots and fatigues, have decent upper body strength (think pull ups and push ups) and be able to ruck hard day after day.Learn how to take good care of your feet. How I trained for selection is to start at about 45-50 pounds and ruck hard for 60 - 90 minutes. Do this every other day and increase to about 80 pounds and be able to go hard/fast for two hours. Take care of your feet by soaping the bottom of your feet, wear two pairs of socks (one lite slick, other heavy cotton or wool)and deal with blisters as soon as possible. Good luck.

The best book out there is Get Selected by Joe Martin. Plus the proceeds go to the Special Operations Warrior Fund.

Look at Professionalsoldiers.com Website run by SF for SF guys. Users with Quiet Professional under their name are vetted and verified SF members. Just a word of advice, follow the instructions and use the search button. There are several SFAS cadre members there.

Train smart - don't go throw a 100lbs ruck on and try to kill yourself. You'll do more damage than good. Take care of your feet, take care of your feet, get used to a ruck and did I mention take care of your feet.

@ KNIGHT11B4; thanks, man! That publication was great reading. I'll be following their advice concerning the runs and the ruck-marches.

I think that I'll be good-to-go with the upper-body strength training, though.

Not a problem, Ive seen the plan outlined in that Ebook work for multiple people.

Good luck.

Good luck on Selection, hope you make it!

I think what Pat said...

I didn't do selection but I trained with 12th and 19th grp during my time, got the certificate to show for it - and the memories- GREAT GREAT bunch of guys - ever one had been on AD for 4-8-12 years.

But from my experience in the ARctic carrying 100lb rucks, what Pat said about the socks is a very true-ism - and carrying a ruck - build up to it and go for 2 hrs a day.

We did 12 mmile marches every week, summer or winter, temperatures didn't matter.

Say, do they still do the swimming pool test? When I tested for 10th we got dropped in the 13' section wit a 25lb rucksack.

Re: Prior Army SF Guys' Advice Needed

The number one thing that hurts guys is that they over train for selection and show up hurt. Take your time and work on your endurance both cardio and muscular. There is no need to train with a ton of weight in your ruck. You need to get your body ready to go and this takes time it is not something that is done overnight. The number one thing is get your feet ready to go the distance. As mentioned by other professioal soldiers is a great source for info as well. I wish you luck at selection

Good luck

Re: Prior Army SF Guys' Advice Needed

Yeah, I think that they still do the swimming pool test. But swimming is the one thing that I can so in my sleep. And since summer is really freakin' nigh, I'm going to be spending a lot of time in the pool doing drown-proofing and swimming with a load. I just have to get it approved with my local "Y."

Me too, I'm like a fish in water.

Except I cannot float, have heard it's in my bones or something but I can hold my breath and still sink.
The pool test was easy, Neil Armstrong style...the rest not so much LOL I was 18 at the time though and probably in the best shape of my life.

Re: Prior Army SF Guys' Advice Needed

Swimming is only done as part of the PT test. I would recommend giving yourself several PT test between now and when you go I saw a lot of people not pass the PT test just do the thought of it being a test. The grading on the PT test is strict to say the least so make evey pushup and situp count. It is your first gate within the process but one that holds value

Good Luck

Re: Prior Army SF Guys' Advice Needed

Better stay in shape, minimum APFT score is 240 throughout the course. There are gates and standards that have to be met in the course prior to some phases (I.e Rucking, APFT, 5 Mile run, and other things). Guys can be dropped at a dime not meeting gates and standards the course. Good luck

Re: Prior Army SF Guys' Advice Needed

Working up to where you can do 55-60 pounds for 6-8 miles at a time, 2-3 days a week should be your routine - if you can do that you'll be fine. Any more is asking for unnecessary injury - same thing the ODAs in our battlespace told me prior to going and it's spot on. You'll never have more in your ruck during selection and the team week events are a different animal. Rucking 80+ pounds for serious distance isn't going to help you for those.

We did our APFT and runs in PTs. I've heard some classes do the runs in ACUs w/ shoes. The course constantly changes with small variables like that so don't get your mind set one way or another. Have fun at Bones Fork.
