Hope I'm putting this in the right spot, maybe should have been under scopes....
Ok my 1pc. picatinny rail came in it's a Nightforce A168 for my Savage model 10. It came w/5 screws 2 short & 3 long.
Obviously I can tell 2 of the long screws go in the back towards the bolt & 1 of the short screws goes in forward most hole. Am I suppose to use a long or short screw in the 2nd hole forward hole?
Also noticed that my Savage did w/factory set screws/plugs in the mounting holes. So from where they coated the rifle the coating has gotten into the mounting holes. Just starting the rail screws by hand I feel a little resistance while trying to gently screw them in. Is this normal? I'm use to most rifles having either set screws or plugs so the factory coating does not get inside. Should I run a tap down each one before I try installing the rail or will it be ok to go ahead & just mount.?
I don't want to strip anything. But nearest store to pick up a tap today is 30 miles away so if it's not necessary to go get one would be a blessing, if needed I will of course.
Thanks for any advice & I apologize if this is a dumb question. First medium range bolt & I don't want to screw it up.
