I have an HS precision stock (aluminum bedded)off of a Rem LTR that I'm trying to mount a SPS tactical in. The problem is when I drop the action into the stock it is noticeably canted. Is this common? What is the proper way to fix it? I'm imagining it is the stock and not the action...

Re: Problem mounting 700 SPS in aftermarket stock

If you have an X-mark in some H-S stocks the trigger will hit the stock, could this be your issue, if not better explain "canted"

Re: Problem mounting 700 SPS in aftermarket stock

It is an X Mark trigger, and the stock was from an older LTR with a standard trigger. I will get some pics up of the problem.

Re: Problem mounting 700 SPS in aftermarket stock

Before you get a Dremel and start grinding away, (1) make sure that the trigger is the problem, (2) if it is the X Mark, make sure you're happy with that trigger before you start modifying the stock. Older style triggers can still be obtained, and there are a lot of aftermarket triggers available, some of which require inletting as well.

It was the trigger rubbing the inside of the stock. Did some light dremeling and got it squared away. Thanks guys

Re: Problem mounting 700 SPS in aftermarket stock

Yep, doesn't take a lot of material removed to free up the trigger cut out, certainly nothing that will ever show, or compromise the integrity of the stock itself. Minor inletting by definition. Give it some extra clearance though, so it won't rub or bind. An extra 1/16" oughtta do it for clearance.

Seeing this topic tonight is ironic really because just a few minutes ago I finished switching an 80's era Rem trigger into a three year old SPS and of course it dropped right in the stock no problem. The Xmark trigger which is now on the 80's era action will NOT drop into the stock and I'll need to do a little dremeling myself. Same canting over to one side the OP describes.

The "problem" is with the design of the newer safety itself on the Xmark. The new gizmos they've designed in there add extra width to the trigger assembly, which means you need a little wider hole in the stock to make it fit......
