Gunsmithing Problem with AI mag feeding in McRee chassis

I have a McRee chassis on my 700 and am having occasional failures to feed. The AI mag doesnt seem to be seated high enough. If I hold the mag from the bottom when cycling the bolt it's fine. If I dont, then sometimes the bolt will run over the next cartridge without feeding it from the mag. Any advice on how to adjust the mag release so the mag seats higher, or should I call McRee? I like to fix things myself whenever possible...

You might simply try opening up the feedlips on the magazine a bit more. This will allow the rounds to sit higher in the mag. Some AICS mags need this adjustment.

+1. What round are you shooting?

With a hack saw cut a slot about 1/4" deep in the end of a 3/8" diameter 3" long rod of aluminum. This tool should slip over the lip and give enough leverage to tweek the lips out slightly. If you measure the width of the lips before you start you will have a reference as to how far you have moved them. Usually a gap of about .410 /.420 will work pretty good on a .308. I have seen where the front may like to be a little wider than the rear.

Re: Problem with AI mag feeding in McRee chassis

If you modify the magazine to work, your rifle will only work with modified magazines. There is a proper fix for it. Actually, it isn't a fix, as that implies a fault in the chassis. The mag catch is mounted to the trigger guard. The trigger guard is removable. The top of the trigger guard can be shaved, causing the mag latch to sit higher, holding the magazine higher. This really needs to be done with a milling machine. Find a local machinist or gunsmith and have them measure the vertical play in the magazine. Have them face off that amount minus .010" or so for a bit of play. If too much is removed, the tip of the mag latch can be shortened.

Re: Problem with AI mag feeding in McRee chassis

I "tuned" my mags and it took all of 3 minutes to make sure all mags were equal. With the 3 AI mags I purchased new one was slightly different and would not feed 100%. I used a crescent wrench snugged on the feed lip and GENTLY opened the lips up.
You talking a very small amount. Once adjusted all my mags are 100%

Watch the end of the vid for reference.

Forgot to add that if you have multiple mags and the feeding issue is with all of them look at your mag height and geometry. Also look at your mags and make sure the rounds are all sitting the same while loaded.

It's all good now! I used an adjustable wrench and very slightly bent out the feed lips. The result was perfect feeding with absolutely no hang ups at all. Thanks to all.

Good to hear.
Now check the rest of those mags!
