The problem is not that they don't shoot well, it is that their trajectory is ..lets say less than flat out to 600.

I ran out of elevation on my Leupold 4x12, so I shimmed the rear Leupold base with .021.
Can I shim the base more?

Impact is still 5 prairie dogs (steel ones) at the bottom of the duplex reticle. Load is 8 inches high at 100. Time for a 20 MOA base?? load is 18 gr Re7 and a 220 gr Lyman 311284.

At such a low velocity their trace can been seen by the shooter's spotter.

Thanks

Re: Problem with cast bullets in 308.

If it is a one piece base you can shim the back of the base with playing cards ( I think one playing card is about six moa ) and then use bedding compound to bed the base. After the compound dries you can bed the back portion of the base where the playing cards were. I did this to my 10-22 and gained enough elevation to get to 500 yards.

* you will likely need longer screws which are easy to get from Brownells

Re: Problem with cast bullets in 308.

I shoot cast exclusively through one of my m40a1 clones, and I've always used a coke can to shim. When I go out to my shootin' spot I always take a coke can and a pair of scissors so that I can shim if needed. The aluminum doesn't give as much as the playing card paper does, and it tends to be a little more stable.

Also, if you are shooting gas checked bullets, as I assume you are, then experiment with IMR8208 XBR. I've had great results with it and .309 cast / GC bullets. IMR8208 seems to give it that extra push to reach it's destination out past 500 yds.

I have some 8208, trouble is I's difficult to get hard alloy. I may have to go to it. I then can crank up the powder.

Unless it is wet you can always tell where that 220 bullet hits, on our range.

If you're making the bullets yourself take 1lb of "Magnum SHot" for shotshell reloading and mix it in with 19lb of wheel weight lead.

Drop the cast bullets straight into a bucket of water out of the mould. You can shoot them with a gas check on 'em to about +/-2500fps without flirting with disaster in my rifles. Some are a little more or less but that gets you a lot faster than the usual 1500-1700fps limit.

Roostershooter, the cards do not stay on the rifle, they are three to jack up the base until the bedding dries. Then you remove the cards/ shims and finish bedding where the cards were.
