Gunsmithing problem with throat

I had a new barrel put on my 700, I think I have a problem with the throat in that when I chamber a round it pushes the bullet into the case almost 20thousandths.
I use 175 sierras, and load everything to mag length. The rifle shoots- really well- but I'm thinking this can't be good.
The question is what can I do? Is it worthwhile to get a throat reamer and open it up myself? Help!!!
Thanks, Kevin.

Re: problem with throat

Try Cepacol, or Ricola. Works wonders....LOL

But seriously, who chambered it? With what spec reamer? If it was proffesionally barreled and they didn't ask if you use a pet load then they failed to do their job. Take it back and ask if they can bump the throat up. If you paid a pro to do it, you shouldn't have to home smith to make it right.

But then again, if it shoots the lights out maybe just leave it.

Re: problem with throat

When you have a rifle rebarreled with an aftermarket barrel, most smiths will throat it for a certain type of bullet. This usually results in a shorter throat so you don't have to load your bullets out of the case neck as long to get to the lands. Just shorten you COAL and roll with it. The throat will eventually wear out and get longer the more you shoot it and eventually you will be able to load out to 2.800 or whatever your mag length is.

Just make sure that the COAL you end up with after you shorten your seating depth is still within SAAMI specs.
