Rifle Scopes Problems with my scope

I have a tasco TG10 40x50 DS. I have had it over 6 years now. A few years ago I noticed that the body of the scope started to get real sticky. It was always in a safe too. Up until about 6 months ago I noticed it was very sticky and the paint was coming off.

I called Tasco who is now owned by Buahnell as of around 2003 or so. The rep was nice and said she has never heard of this problem before. She e mailed me a form to fill out to return it so it can be evaluated. She said since the optics are fine they may just give me a new one free of charge.

I know a lot of people I haven spoken to speak down about Tasco, but it works for me. Especially being on a budget. Has this happened to anyone in the past ???

I'm surprised about the paint coming off like it is. I figured something would have broken at some point in time, but not the paint to come off. Oh well, it was a gift anyway. Get what you pay for.

Re: Problems with my scope

Had a Swift scope do something like that once.
The finish did not come off but had a sticky residue show up
on the adjustable objective end. Used it in the cold and heat and never had any problem with fogging or anything and it kept working as it should.
thought it may have been a nitrogen leak pushing factory lube out of the threads but I expected to see a problem when the temp changed. It never happened.
I cant tell you what is was but it did not stop the scope in my case.
Pack it up and send it back. If they tell you what it was let me know!

Re: Problems with my scope

There are countless and very common chemicals that will peel paint. I would suspect that the scope had at one point maybe been cleaned with something that left a residue and peeled the paint. Or maybe humidity rusted the cheap scope body peeling the paint. Either way it sucks but you might consider just stripping the paint and repainting it yourself, might be worth not dealing with the hassle of sending it back and waiting.

Re: Problems with my scope

Know of a few local gents who put the 'sticky stuff' on it themselves! They think their Trashco is the "best f**kin scope in the world" and hump them like a cheap crack ho everytime they touch them. lol

Sorry, I am bored and just couldn't let it slide

See, OP, now with your Barskas and your NC Stars, you don't get so much gummy runoff, and what you do get sort of tastes like molasses. In fact, it's pretty good in your coffee.

Re: Problems with my scope

FWIW, the only adhesive problem that I had was with a Millett that refused to keep its scope cap on, which for some inexplicable reason was glued to the tube from the factory.

Re: Problems with my scope

Some serious scope snobbery going on here.

I would suspect the finish was exposed to some chemical that degraded the finish. A solvent of some kind possibly when the weapon was cleaned.

If Tasco wants to see it, let them see it. It doesn't hurt to ask.

If they don't fix or replace it, then you could probably strip the finish rattle can it and come out OK.

Yeah. Buy a USO or Nightforce next time. Then these guys will respect you more.

Thanks for the advice. They wouldn't be talking shit if they were flipping the bill for my new scope. No hard feelings here, I've got tough skin, especially with the job I have and some of the people I deal with on the streets.

El Vaquero,

The same thing happened to me! I have had it about 7 years all of the time in the safe. I take it out to play a couple of time a year, and last night the rubberized pieces on the focus ring, and power select ring were very sticky like glue and tar mixed together. The finish on the scope is fine. I had to put goof off on my hands to clean them up. Nothing else bad to say about the scope, I shoot holes in quarters at 100 yards all of the time.
