As metal supplies dwindled, alternative shipbuilding materials were considered. One such material was Pykrete, a mixture of ice and wood pulp. The mixture was formed into blocks for building ships to be used in the cold waters of the Mid-Atlantic.
Lord Mountbatten demonstrated the material's strength vs regular ice for a gathering of Allied Forces leaders and military commanders, including Churchill and Roosevelt.
He fired a round into the ice and it shattered.
He fired a round into the pykrete and it bounced off and nicked the trousers leg of US Fleet Admiral Ernest King.
