Hi, I'm new to the forum. I searched around the website tonight looking at reviews and what not on Proof Research. Anyway, at the Dallas Safari Club Show in January, I bought a blank barrel from them as an impulse buy and it's been a while but now I'm finally ready to build. As far as smithing goes, I am going to use Elk Meadow Performance. I was wondering if ya'll wouldn't mind sharing any Proof builds you have done because I am trying to get some ideas as far as aesthetics and general specifications. Looking through previous threads on the subject of Proof, it seems to be conclusive that many of ya'll do not fancy their barrels. I was just in the market for a super light weight rifle as I am getting tired of lugging my massive 700 above the tree line in heavy wind and snow during elk season. To me it seemed like there were few complaints about the brand as long as it was for hunting focus and not frequent bench rest precision shooting. Any ideas, advice, or rants are greatly appreciated! (Forgot to ask… is there any reason I should be talked out of chambering the barrel in 300 win mag and not something else?) I am not an absolute rifle/sharp shooting fanatic by any stretch so pardon my ignorance on the subject.

As far as my personal life goes… I am from Dallas but moving up to Utah to start college next month. I spend the summers in NW Wyoming on my family's farm where I also hunt elk, mulies, antelope, and black bears when season rolls around. I am a hunting addict but not a shooting addict if that even makes any sense.

I have no input on that particular barrel. The 300 would be a great choice of calibers. It will do everything you ask it to. The only other caliber I would suggest is the 7mmRM, but I'm sure that isn't an option with the barrel you have.

They are good barrels, I would look into a 300 Norma it's the best cartridge out their for a 30 cal in my opinion, here's is a pic of 300 Norma I had built for a customer I work for

They save you a little weight just depends on your set up, the rifle in the pic above weighs 12lbs with the atacr and the barrel is straight 1.250" and 28" long, but if ur wanting to go light weight with that barrel I'd use the stock too, only weighs a 1.5 lbs

I have been very satisfied with the barrels I've purchased. Your weight savings will depend on your stock as well. Mine is a 308 win, 22.5 inch tube, defiance action, manners t5 carbon fill stock, hs precision bottom metal, with a 1.8 - 10 USO on top weight without loaded mag is 10.5 lbs I came out 1/2 lb over my goal weight. Last 5 shot group was .49 moa if I remember right.

Jense Precision/ Proof Research 300WM build. I have made some changes, now i have HS precision DMB so it is clean and flush, and I'm running a Premier Hunter 3-15x50. Most accurate rifle i own and is a dream to carry in the field.
