Re: proper barrel break in for a 338 lapua

Personaly, I shoot one round and send a nylon brus soaked in Hoppes#9 down the barrel and wait a few moments. Then I send a dry patch down. Then a patch soaked in a strong copper solvent like Shooters choice. Again wait a few moments and send a dry patch down. After that I shoot a group of three or five and repeat that short cleaning procedure. Depending on the amount of blue color I get on the second cleaning I may or may not repeat another group/clean sequence. <span style="font-weight: bold">Thats it, and thats all you need. No big elaborate procedure and your not keeping all that early copper fouling in your bore!</span>

I think that LWUSMC has captured the essence of proper barrel break-in with his timeless tutorial:

This is how the pros do it.

That's my second favorite break-in video. NOBODY's is by far the funniest.

To the OP, you heard of five different ways of doing it because it's largely based on opinion whether or not you should do it. If you sit down to break in a barrel and shoot a half inch five shot group with the first five rounds, why continue? I'd say it's pretty good as it is.

Was that the one where the guy tosses his brand new Kimber Montana into a bunch of broken shale? If it's the one I'm thinking of it was hilarious.

Serious answer to your question...

In my experience factory barrels, which often have nasty marks left from the machining, require the most extensive break-in, which is really the wearing away process of the edges sticking up to tear parts of the jacket away. This is why shoot 1, 2 or three and clean is so important (otherwise your "break-in" bullet is now riding on a layer of laid-down copper and is no longer wearing in your barrel).

Most premium hand-lapped match barrels require little to no break-in.

Yep. That's the one.

For better or worse, this thread was not too bad. I've seen some where the OP gets run off the site never to be seen again.

I apologize for not giving you the serious answer first. This place is like one big, happy, dysfunctional family with a couple convicted felon relatives thrown in for good measure. And sometimes the humorous banter gets in the way of useful communication.

I hope you're not too put off. They're a great bunch of guys once you get to know them and a wealth of very useful information is available here.

Re: proper barrel break in for a 338 lapua

I will clean after every shot for the first ten shots, after every second for the next twenty, and so on up until finishing ten strings of five, with cleanings between each string. Obviously ver time consuming and monotonous but I was given the recommendation by someone whose opinion I respect very much.

Re: proper barrel break in for a 338 lapua

The problem with both the break in and cleaning questions is that they're asked all the time and they become hotly debated with a lot of threads going right down the toilet. Even among premium barrel makers, opinions on those subjects differ greatly. The main thing I do when buying a new rifle is to clean the bore before ever firing a shot. You don't know what airborne grit, dirt or whatever got in the bore between the time they proof test the barrel then send it for packing and shipping. I don't follow any break in procedure other than making sure the bore is clean for that first shot. If the manufacturer has a written break in procedure, then it won't hurt to follow it. Armalite has one for their AR-10T models, GAP has break in and cleaning instructions in their download section http://www.gaprecision.net/ga-precision-download.html . A lot of experianced shooters feel that break in and constant cleaning do more damage to the bore than good.
