Guys, don't tear my head off.......I did use the search engine.
I know its an elemenatry question, but I'm wanting to know your opinion.
Is there a certain spot on a scope tube that is optimal for placing scope rings. I've seen rings in all different locations on the tube, just wondering if its personal preferance or is there really something to where you put them.
    Thanks!!

I believe it has a lot to do with where on the rifle the scope base mounts, and then where the scopes sits on the rings for the proper eye relief. If the scope sits on a rail, then the rings should sit as far apart as possible while conforming to eye relief requirements and without sitting right up against the bells.

Exactly, and to add to your point, the reason you want the rings as far apart as possible is to add the greatest support possible to the bell and eyepiec during recoil.

I am a hunter mostly and I place the rear ring on my picatinny in a way to have 2 or 3 slots in the back of it so come winter I am able to move the scope back to have a good sight picture due to wearing heavy clothes the front as far forward has possible
