pros and cons- Rem 700 S/A and L/A

Re: pros and cons- Rem 700 S/A and L/A

Your kidding right? Try stuffing a 300 RUM in a Short action Remmy or making a Long Action Remmy work with a 223 rem.

So other then the length of the bolt, length of the mag box, length of the follower, length of the receiver, distance between the scope mount holes front to rear, et al.

And one is made for short action cartridges, and one is made for long action cartridges.

One over the other, because one cartridge is longer than other. And some can be made to work in both long and short actions.

Now what was your question?

BobinNC,
Obviously the round and components differ in size. My question is for calibers that are offered in a SA and LA why choose one over the other? Do YOU prefer LA or SA? I have not owned or fired a SA rifle and do not want to buy one without getting some input on it. Thanks

Bacarrat,

You can buy a 7mm Rem SA Ultra Mag or a 7mm mag. While the projectile remains the same the brass does not. My question is if I to choose between the two. What are the pros and cons for them, i.e. price, velocity etc? im sorry if I was unclear.

Re: pros and cons- Rem 700 S/A and L/A

All magnums are not created equal. The SAUM and the Remington Magnums have different case capacities, they will not shoot the same. There are pros and cons to every caliber. Pick what's important to you and go with it.

Re: pros and cons- Rem 700 S/A and L/A

All factors being equal, the short-action should be stiffer than a long-action, and thus potentially more accurate?

Also "short, fat" powder-column may burn more consistently than long skinny?

I'd never really looked at long-actions before, but am considering one for a 284 Winchester build.

Re: pros and cons- Rem 700 S/A and L/A

The question you are asking isn't about action length.

Your asking why go with a diffrent chambering that uses the same projectiles.

There are many reasons to choose one over the other:

case capacity( dictates velocity most of the time)
case shape( can increase effeciency)
what weight bullet you wish to shoot
avalibility of componets
barrel life
if a costim build the length of the rnd vs the length of your action

Ok, now that you've explained it in more detail, the answer is: 2.940". Any cartridge that I wish to load over that OAL I would put in a long action. Any cartridge under that OAL I would put in short action.

I am speaking specifically about reloads, not factory OAL. A 7mm SAUM or 300 SAUM, or any of the WSM's can go in either. Which one I would put it in, LA or SA, is based on the bullet I consider ideal for my application, and how long in OAL I want to load it. So 2.940" is "MY" cutoff.

Why, because you cannot stuff a cartridge over 2.940" into a SA Remmy without major surgery. Seekins Precision DBM tops out a 2.940", and even then the feed ramp needs a lttle work. Anything over that is better off in a LA anyway.....IMHO and YMMV

I'm sure that are other DBM systems around that let you extend a SA Remmy a bit more, but 2.940" is a long as I'll go in a SA Remmy.

Google search 300 Winchester ballistics and then 300 wsm ballistics. Most calibers that also now have a short magnum will pick up a couple hundred fps. The biggest improvment was with the 270 vs the 270 wsm.

Your comparing ballistics of a case that is based off of a 30-06 to that of a magnum? Of course the 270WSM is going to go faster.

Walsh,

I've read, but not tried myself to measure it, the following:

AW 10rd Mag 2.980 OAL
AICS Mags 2.880 OAL
AE 5rd Mag 2.925 OAL

This is third hand info. obtained from a Sniper's Hide Google search.

Thanks for the help. Those posts are more what I was looking for. When I finally get my first bolt build done I will post pics. Once again I apologize for being unclear at the start of the post.

Any ideas as to where I can find a decent priced custom action?
