I'll be buying parts to install a PRS on an LMT MWS during the coming sales.

I'm pretty good understanding what I need for parts but having never taken off a receiver extension and owning no tools to do it I'm in a quandry on what else to buy.

My main concern is how difficult will it be to remove the factory installed castle nut?

How deep is the LMT staking? Will I be able to clamp the receiver in a "between the knees" vice and break it loose? Do I need to be concerned with "twisting" the receiver? If so how do I avoid it?

When tightening everything back up will the PRS directions provide proper tourqe values?

    Thanks for your help.

I installed the PRS on my LMT. I doubt you will be able to get the castle nut free holding the LMT between your knees. I tried and could not. I put the LMT (lower only) in a gun vise clamping on the receiver extension and tried to use the Hammer Heard tool which is supposed to get off any staked castle nut, no dice. Looking at the stakes the didn't seem to be very deep so I took a very small bit that was smaller than the castle nut cut out a drilled the stake out with out damaging the castle nut. You don't have to go very deep. Used the Hammer Hear and off it came. Installing the PRS and the rest of the items required was a snap. Just tightened things up to where I felt was enough torque (I don't recall any specific instructions that came with the PRS stock). Nothing has ever come loose in the year + since I have installed the PRS. Did it the same way installing the PRS on my Armalite AR 10A4
Hope that helps. I sure others will chime in.

Thanks for the replies. looks like I'll be buying my stuff Friday when Brownells opens the black rifle sale

For a buffer sping I'm intending to get an Ar-10 spring made by Heavy Buffers. For the buffer I was intending to get the standard Colt A2 part. Is the A2 rifle buffer compatible with a .308? I wont be shooting surpressed or max loads.

Don't sweat the small shit!!Go to your local auto parts store and borrow or rent their lock ring tools or contact Brownells and for 15.00 you can be the proud owner of a new Buttstock removal tool. A must have for ANY AR owner or operator!!

Geez hadnt thought about lock ring tools - got a complete Snap On set of those. They wont be as nice as a real extension tube wrench though.

My wish list for Friday has that nice Brownells 4 points of contact stock extension tool already on it. Working on my motorcycle I learned years ago if there is a right tool you are better off buying it as it will pay for itself in the long run by ease of use or avoiding breaking whatever you are working on. Tools are forever so their cost is cheap over time. I'm ready to buy the tools now if I knew what I need for this simple job. Do I need a vice block held in place by the take down pins to support the lower receiver? Will a delrin magwell block work for supporting the lower? Apparently holding the receiver in a "between the knees" vice will not be strong enough to break the staking free on an LMT. I like Santos suggestion of clamping on the tube as any damage to the tube is cheaper to repair than the cost of replacing a receiver. As an aside I will be taking the rifle to an experienced AR builder to handle an FFL transfer so if I run into any real trouble with this I'll be stopping and letting the guy that has done it before do it. I'd rather get the tools now though and not have to depend on anyone if I can avoid it.

Anyway is a standard A2 buffer good to go on a .308?
