The Great Beyond
SO I think the PRS bug has hit me. WHile I have decided on a "wait and see" and am using my current rig to start with, I have thought about a starter rifle and it seems the Ruger PR is a solid choice were I to make a switch to some newer gear, however I do want to make sure I am not missing some good alternatives

Requirements
Budget: $1000ish (rifle) (max $2k)
Caliber: 6.5 Creed (not reloading yet)
Threaded Barrel (I have Supressors)
AICS mag capat (for PRS)
Adjustable Stock (I'm a big fella that almost always doesn't fit a regular rifle).

I was reading about swapping barrels and eventually I probably will shoot enough to burn a barrel--is that something I also n eed to consider (I shoot USPSA and went from avg joe, 200 rounds per year to several thousand per yer).

I have seen offerings from Savage, Tikka, and Barenga but not sure what they offer over the ruger--it is tough to separate noise from fact.

To compre with USPSA, what I am looking for is a Glock--something that gets me into the game and will serve me for some time while I improve my skill level.

A lot of it comes down to preference. I prefer standard stock over a chassis whereas some people for chassis over a stock. This is why I prefer Bergera, and Savage for factory guns. Savage has many different setups of their rifles so you can probably find exactly what you want in a setup from them. The Ruger rifle is nice but I don't like the chassis show of that's what you like get it. Several of the guys I shoot 22lr competition with use the Ruger precision and love it until my semi 1022 kills them on speed shoot stages.

All the rifles you listed I have had good experience with, and would recommend you get what feels the most comfortable to you.

IMO the Ruger is the best entry level rifle. It has some shortcomings but nothing that isn’t easily fixed. You can get a badass prefit from LRI or Proof, a Seekins SP3R forend, and swap the stock and still have sub $1500 into it after dumping all the factory parts.

I’d factor some KAC mags into the budget too.

Bergara HMR would work for your needs. The Ruger Precision Rifle will work fine also if you like AR stye feel in a bolt gun. I hate AR grips on my rifles so that is why it wouldn't work for me.

With a max of $2000 that opens things up a lot, to a point you could get into a custom action if you wanted. There are a lot of companies producing production guns for $1999 that come with custom actions and barrels. MPA has one with a curtis action/xcaliber barrel/trigger tech trigger and their hybrid chassis. Or you could buy a bighorn origin with a savage prefit, trigger tech trigger and krg bravo chassis inside that 2000 and then you would be set up to do the barrel swaps at home and already have that custom action. Its a root I wish I would have gone. I bought a savage on super sale, threw it in an mpa chassis and it has worked great for me and have had no problems with reliability or manipulating the bolt. Is it the smoothest bolt ever? no, but it isn't hard to run by any stretch of the imagination. Lots of different options for you, so the wait and see what you like might be the best. But if you spend up a little bit initially I don't think you will regret it.

The Savages are awesome shooter's however I have found running the bolt on them to be difficult as compared to some other rifles. I shoot a Savage myself, but the action is were I struggle with them.
After a few barrels they smooth out considerably,,,,,,and then have difficulty ejecting the case.
I need to try a new extractor and ejector, mine would be a nightmare in a PRS setting as it sits now.

The nice thing about the ruger is there are much more prefit barrel options. Yes you will burn barrels in prs. The tac A1 not so much. Probably as you start to shoot matches you may get some more ideas what you like.

That was something I had not considered and will have to check out. I have a sep budget for glass--so spending wisely a little bit more is definitly an option.

I think SHOT had just the thing for you this year. Pick up an ultimatum defacto barreled action for $1k, comes with a trigger tech trigger, and drop it in one of the new KRG x-ray gen 4 chassis for $449. $1449 for one heck of a rifle setup

You can see pics I posted of the chassis in the KRG 2020 products thread. Toolless cheek riser, butt pad positioning, and LOP adjustments. Also swappable for left or right handed shooters. You should have to file down the magazine catch, but it’s otherwise plug and play. IMO these two are the best value in bolt action guns right now.

My friend is looking for an action right now? Where can one find that deal? I looked for that on their website and only saw one barreled action for $1999

It’ll be right on their website, they just came out for SHOT, I imagine they’ll be up on their website within a week or two, but you can email them to ask specifics, maybe they’ll put him on a list to get some of the first ones. I have one of their deadline actions, their CS is really good and their products are top quality. They also have an Instagram and I think Facebook that they keep up to date.

Awesome. I’ll let him know. That’s a deal for sure
