What are the major differences between the HS Precision PSS take-offs that are sometimes available online and a new B&C Tac or Light Tactical stock. I wanted to do the B&C in tan w/ black web, but if I go the used HS route, I'd be stuck with black.

Looks are #2 behind performance so I'll deal with the color or paint it IF it's that much better. What makes the HS $100 higher than the B&C?

Re: PSS Take-off vs B&C Light Tac

I can't say what makes the HS cost more, probably the name itself, but the B&C Light Tactical is an excellent value with better ergonomics in my experience. I think the B&C offers a lot more in looks and functionality for roughly $230 brand new than a used HS take off stock. IMO, the B&C stock has a better buttstock with a comb that seems to feel better than the HS stock and a butt hook for support in different positions. I like the grip area on the B&C stock a whole lot better than the one on the HS stock. The B&C doesn't have a huge palm swell like the HS which a lot of people have a complained about. I also think the foreend on the B&C is better in looks, feel, and functionality. This has been my experience from using some of the HS products and then trying the B&C stocks and I can honestly say that it was money well spent on the B&C. I think it's a phenominally cost effective upgrade for the Remington 700 for somebody that wants a well made stock but maybe can't afford to step to a McMillan or Manners stock.

Re: PSS Take-off vs B&C Light Tac

I am in agreement with Trigger Monkey.
I started with a PSS. I liked it OK, but it could have been better.
The B&C Vertical Grip Tactical I now have on my Lite Tactical Rifle is better in my opinion. I like the grip better, and I like the Forend being Wide and Flat a lot better. The B&C has a full length bedding block, the old PSS did not extend into the forend as I recall. Mine is OD with Black Cob Web. A very good looking stock.
I would go with a new B&C Tactical over an H&S 700 take off stock for my money. I spent a few extra bucks and had the added reinforcement put in mine when I ordered it from Stockeys Stocks.

Re: PSS Take-off vs B&C Light Tac

Thanks for the info fellas. Exactly what I was looking for. I'll get my hands on the ones I can and make a decision.

Here are a few rookie questions...

1. What am I going to need to switch from my plastic SPS stock into my new B&C or HS? The full length aluminum bedding block takes the place of epoxy/mud bedding correct, or is there still more bedding to do???

2. What are some of the other simple upgrades I should do at this point? I see bigger recoil lugs coming up in alot of descriptions, but I don't know what this is or what it does.

3. "I spent a few extra bucks and had the added reinforcement put in mine when I ordered it from Stockeys Stocks." - What was that and for what purpose?

I have never done any rifle modification but I'm a diy kind of person, so I'd like to do as much of the stuff that I can myself so I can learn the in's and out's of my gun and feel the pride of doing as many of the mods myself as possible.

Re: PSS Take-off vs B&C Light Tac

To go from one stock to the next you should have to do very little since both stocks will be inletted for the Remington 700 barreled action with varmint contour barrel and BDL floor plate. The aluminum bedding blocks contact the action in certain places to rigidly hold the action in place. You can bed if you want but it is not necessary.

Don't worry about a larger recoil lug at this point, you won't really need it with the stock barreled action. If you decide to rebarrel it with another barrel that'd be the time to add a thicker lug if you wanted.

In my opinion keep things simple for now. Upgrade the stock, get a good optics package going, and focus on the fundamentals and the other basic skills so that when it comes time for some of the more popular upgrades you'll be able to get the most out of them.

Re: PSS Take-off vs B&C Light Tac

Perfect thanks.

I have a good idea about the optics package. Here's what I've come up with:

EGW Base
Burris XTR Rings
SS or Falcon Men 10x42 Fixed
or
Falcon Men 4-14 or 5-25 if I decide to go variable power

Re: PSS Take-off vs B&C Light Tac

What are yall's thoughts on cutting the 26" barrel and recrowning it? I'm thinking 20-22" and possibly threaded for a brake of some sort. Will a break totally piss off the guys at the bench next to me? For me a .308 doesn't need a brake, but it would probably be nice after a long range day.

Re: PSS Take-off vs B&C Light Tac

I ordered mine with Magnum Reinforcement in the Lug Area, a $50 option. Probably not needed on 308 and lesser power rounds. Like the Oversize Recoil Lug, It may not help, but I made another thing better on the build.
From Stockeys Stocks an A2 Vertical Grip Tactical Medalist runs $217.42 in Web.
It looked like the Lug Recess would probably take an over sized Recoil Lug. The purpose of the Oversize Recoil Lug is to help with Action Flex on a HEAVY Barrel that is Free Floated.
My old PSS had the factory Lug and it shot fine. No Flex Problem Noted. My 3 custom Rifles all have oversized Lugs. Do they help. Good Question, they make me feel better anyway. My Lite Tactical Rifle has the factory Lug, and I have no plan to change it out.
For modifications I would spend my first money over the cost of the stock on bottom metal that accepts an AI Magazine.

SPS Stock Change Requirements: You should have everything you need on the Rifle. The SPS should have BDL Lower Metal. The change should be drop in simple. Reuse the Floor Plate and Action Screws.

Re: PSS Take-off vs B&C Light Tac

I would leave the barrel at 26 Unless you want some weight off bad. I like all the speed I can get.

Skip the Break on a 308. Lots of noise for the guy next to you. Not allowed in some matches from what I am told. Not needed.

I like Super Snipers for a cheap scope. I have 4 in various powers. I have had a couple more and never had any problem with any of them. You can normally get most all your money back when moving on up to a used Leupold later.

The break is not needed unless you are shooting multiple targets from strange positions. Yes it will totally piss off the guy next to you.

Leave the barrel alone unless you have a specific need to go shorter. Spend your money on ammo.

Re: PSS Take-off vs B&C Light Tac

BASE/RINGS:

Make sure they are all 1913 Picatinny Spec, or BOTH Weaver, or you will have fitment issues. 1913 Pic spec is ten times better than weaver as it is better finished and accurately finished.

Spend the money on the good stuff, ie, Seekins, USO, Badger, TPS, or one of the 1913 spec, but those are the best.

+1 Buy the good stuff the first time and go 1913 forget the weaver stuff.

Re: PSS Take-off vs B&C Light Tac

FYI you can purchase New H&S take off's from Mike @ Tac-Ops. $200ish.

The Bell and Carlson Medalist "A5" is one heavy stock, thet may something you want to keep in mind. I do however hear nice things about the "Light Tactical".
