Gunsmithing PTG finish reamer dimensions for 284

Re: PTG finish reamer dimensions for 284

PTG can. Call them and have them fax or email you the blueprint for your reamer of choice. I'm sure they have more than one 284 reamer blueprint on hand, so you need to know what you are asking for. Generally you can tell them "284/match/no turn neck/over SAAMI OAL kind of info and Dave can match you up to a blueprint they have already done.

Re: PTG finish reamer dimensions for 284

As an added note. you need to specify either 284win or 284norma/ lapua. There is a BIG difference. Don't ask why I know this

Via PM's he was referencing a 6.5-284 reamer, and there are some serious differences there as he found out (and I've read about). I am looking for a 284 Win reamer to shoot the 162 Amax and sometimes the 180 Berger or JLKs

you also need to know if you are going to neck up 6.5-284 lapua brass or use straight 284 winchester brass. my neck is tight on winchester brass and i don't think necked up laupa brass would fit.

Good to know, thanks. I didn't know that the necked up brass wouldn't fit. I was planning to use WIN brass instead of Lapua because of the cost differences.

Necked up brass should be thinner.

necked up lapua 6.5-284 brass should be thinner than winchester 284 brass? i have not personally tried it but i heard the opposite. the winchester brass has been working fine for me so i have had no reason to try anything else.

winchester brass seems to be working just fine for me.

No idea i dont think i have any win brass to check it with. But if they both start at lets say .015 thick then the 6.5 brass would thin out about .0005 to .001 per side. Ending up at .014-.0145 per side.

i was under the impression that the lapua brass had thicker necks but i don't have any lapua brass to measure. my winchester brass measures about .015" (as best as i can measure it with a dial caliper). if the lapua brass is the same, then i agree, it would be thinner when opened up to 7mm.

Re: PTG finish reamer dimensions for 284

well that sounds about teh same as winchester 284 brass. i guess the lapua brass will work with the same chamber reamer. that's what i get for passing on second hand "internet" information

Not sure if this was meant toward me, as I do know the chamber reamer diameter of a 284 win is .497 and the Lapua is .501. If I was confused when we talked and you meant neck diameter, my mistake. If you mean someone else, WHEW, I feel better

nah, that wasn't meant toward you.

but out of curiosity, what dimension are you referring to in your post? i know i heard there was a difference between necked up lapua brass and winchester brass. i though it was the neck diameter but now it sounds like that is not where it's at.
