http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=464834

Will this work on a rem 700 varmit countour barrel?

Will it clean the muzzle face?

How is the quaility?

I am considering getting one but was un sure if this is what i needed to re crown a 700 heavy barrel.

thanks

Re: PTG

If the name on the box is PTG you are pretty much guaranteed a quality product. They don't make junk.

We used to use a similar (same even?) tool to crown HBAR post-ban barrels when we threaded them (did about 200 for a company). Made for quick work, but we had it chucked up in our tailstock. If you're talking about hand turning or (God help you) chucking it in a hand drill all bets are off. Depending on the current crown on your barrel it may take a lot of turns by hand.

You also may want to check but as I recall the tool is a .750 and might not cover the entire face of your muzzle.

Re: PTG

thanks
i was thinking i would use a drill press at lower speed.
ill double check the size, it did look to small to cover the face had a feeling it was.

Would there be a better one out there to use by hand?

Re: PTG

ill have my smith do the crown then.
I figured since i might be cutting the barrel even shorter hence another crown later on it would pay for it self but if there is a chance it will harm the accuracy ill just spend the money and get it done right.

thanks

This tool will pay for itself real quick, can cut up to 1 5/8" O.D. barrels, 11 degree crown, no chatter, procedure takes 3-5 minutes and no rifle disassembly is required. Can also cut chrome lined barrels, as cutter is equipped with carbide blades.
Pilot is expandable, centers and clamps its on lands, and does not rotate.
