Quality control, one that got away.

A bit of a reminder of the need to QC with your own eyes, I found this defective piece of brass in a batch of 400 new cases. Probably a good thing it went to a hand loader and didn’t slip through into a box a factory ammo. If your wondering why a new case looks so dirty it was my test piece in the annealer and has tempilaq on it.

Here's my contribution to QC oopsies...
  1. Adult offspring spots and immediately buys a very-lightly-used, fully-dressed, highly-sought-after tactical shotgun at our favorite LGS
  2. Functions fine with standard and heavy target loads on a skeet field.
  3. New day. He takes it to a pistol bay to test buckshot and slugs. I stay on rifle range 300 yards away.
  4. I hear Boom. Boom. B-boom. Pause.
  5. I hear full-auto B-b-b-boom. Pause. B-b-b-b-b-boom. Pause.
  6. His car comes back down the hill. Not only is he most surprised by rock'n'roll; he now understands that keeping the thing under control is no easy task.
  7. Back to LGS, where sales manager is a walking encyclopedia of gun knowledge. I have always prided myself on my level of knowledge. I can't hold a candle to him. He takes the shotgun, his hands move, and somehow a few seconds later the trigger group is in his left hand.
  8. He wiggles some pieces. Lifts it close to his eyes. Makes a WTF noise.
  9. Explains how a piece of the trigger group lacks a notch cut in it which enables the trigger to reset properly. Back to the manufacturer it went. Came back fast. No problem since.

What do you think would be the result of firing that round? Think the primer would stay in?

There was a thread on here once where someone fired a piece of brass like that in some factory ammo. I remember it messed up the case head and primer came out. I want to say it damaged the extractor ejector and bolt face also. I remember being surprised at the amount of damage it caused to the brass. I can't seem to find the thread though.

I believe it. I once (with ear and eye pro on) hit a primer with a hammer on a concrete floor. It made a huge bang, and left a divot in the concrete. The amount of power in those little things is incredible.

My dad did the same thing with primer. He got all of us kids to watch. It scared us all, he wasn't expecting it to be that powerful either. Mom came out to see what was up. About the same look as when we were all out their with him reloading and lighting hit the tree in the front yard. I think she was expecting a smoking crater, after the lighting though. LOL

A relative of mine, as a kid, did the same thing with a blasting cap. Missing and mangled fingers resulted.

Another kid in my home town decided to make a rocket by packing match heads into an empty 12-gram CO2 cartridge. He did the packing with a hammer and punch. He lost a hand.

Edit: Growing up in the south in the 1950s... it's a true miracle that more of us, definitely including me, aren't dead. I guess more than a few of us, including me, have lots of scars and healed bones.
