I was talking to a company that does custom reloading and asked about 308 and 208 amax combo. He said that he has worked this up in about 5 rifles. One rifle that was 22" barrel 1 in 10 (2580 fps) and the other 20" barrel 1 in 10 (2550 fps) that were very accurate til 800 yds. He said after 800 yards the accuracy went away and the bullet was uncontrollable. Any of you guys with short barrel had this trouble?

Indeed...

It is well known, but little understood, a phenomenon of quantum physics, there does indeed exist a disturbance in the force at 801yds, so great in magnitude, only affecting bullets over 205 gr weight, in only caliber of 30.

The bullet, does indeed become, totally uncontrollable, as even the awesome powers of the most trained mind, cannot penetrate that invisible barrier, to force the bullet to stay on target.

Alas...many here have tried and failed...and that is why, all experienced shooters have surrendered to the Dark Side...the 6.5 bore.

Pray tell...who is this wizard of which you speak?

For he, is one of the very, very few, that know of this secret knowledge.

For verily, I wish to seek him out, to load my ammo, in it's entirety, from this day hence.

Thought it sounded kinda odd, just thought I would ask. He said the other 3 rifles were fine. Just those two. Maybe twist was really 1 in 12. He said all 5 grouped very well, just those two past 800 had problems. Don't make much sense.

This is a bad bullet choice for a .308. You won't be able to push it fast enough to get any real benefits out of it.

This bullet belongs in 30-06, 300's,. etc.

Didn't realize he was a member on here but Chad at Dallas Reloads was the one I talked to. Found one of the guys that had the problem on here also.

wondering if the new 200 berger hybrid would work better

Re: question about 208 amax in 20" barrel 308

It might well start to go transsonic (i.e. cross from supersonic to subsonic speed) at about that range, which can mess up trajectory...

Re: question about 208 amax in 20" barrel 308

Chad will level with you an tell you the truth. I shot this in a 19" 308 to 1k running them around those speeds and I didn't have any problem from a 1-11 Kreiger.

Re: question about 208 amax in 20" barrel 308

Wonder if it has something to do with the amax bullet. I read where a guy was having same trouble with 162 amax in 7mm-08 and he loaded the new 162 bthp match with same data and the problem went away.

My rifle is SPS tactical aac-sd with 1 in 10 20"

I'm running the 210 Berger vld @ 2600 fps from 24" Remington 11.25 twist 5r w/ RL17. Was running the Amax, but it got hard to find for a bit. It was awsome out past 1k(for a 308 anyway). At my altitude (5000 ft) its supersonic past 1300 meters. I love the load, but the RL17 is a little picky about temp. The 210 shoots good to but the Amax seemed to transition better.

What speed do they magically become beneficial at? I've pushed them anywhere from 2470-2650fps using different powders and 2400fps is enough to get get past 1200 yards at sea level, supersonic.

I must be missing the benefit at those speeds, even though ballistically it has better numbers than the 175 sierra, 178 amax, 178 hpbt, etc.
