"How much better barrel life? Moon had 3300 rounds of 115 DTACs at around 3100fps through his .243 and it was still shooting great and won the Shumway 1000 yard trophy at the SHC. I would choose the .243 between the two."

Ok I seen this post and was wondering if this was without any cut and set back ?

to achieve this many rounds before a cut and set back.....if so great, if not, it doesn't matter to me I love my 243 and it shoots great

thanks

Re: Question about 243 barrel life

I believe that quote was from me so I will answer for you.

Yes that was without any cut back and starting to use Tubb TMS rounds at about 2500 rounds. Also that rifle made it to about 3600 rounds and was still sub MOA. Moon did set it back about 1.5 inches at 3600 rounds as he sold it and wanted the new owner to have a fresh throat.

What brand of barrel was that, Rob?

Is this typical of a 243? That is quite a bit more life than I would have thought one would get from a 243.

Re: Question about 243 barrel life

I got 1100 rounds out of mine...

Then I sold it

The only people dogging a .243 are the one's getting their asses handed to them by a chick round....

Re: Question about 243 barrel life

Keep in mind that Moon also was bumping up the powder charges at around 2,000 rounds to keep the velocity in the sweet spot (if I remember right). But, he told me that the accuracy was still there even at the high round counts.

Re: Question about 243 barrel life

Yup that is true that he was bumping the powder charge up but that's not a big deal. As you said accuracy was there and just needed some more powder to keep the velocity.

IIRC the DTAC 115's are HBn coated, similar to Moly. Not sure on the powder.

Re: Question about 243 barrel life

I use RL25 with good results. Also have used H4350, but got lower ES/SD numbers with the 25.

Also showed real promising results from RL17 in mine!
