Question about AI Picatinny rail cant

I can't find the answer to this on the AI website, so maybe someone here has it: Does the AI Picatinny rail have any cant?

In particular, I would like it to be 20 MOA, but I'm guessing they are flat.

Re: Question about AI Picatinny rail cant

Thanks, Adam. That means an AI rifle is off the short list. I have a Hensoldt SSG-P with its own mount that requires a 20 MOA base to get to 1kyd with 308. I checked to see whether Near made a canted rail for the AI dovetail, but didn't find one.

Re: Question about AI Picatinny rail cant

AIAW and AIAE utilize the scope mount with built in MOA (18/28/40).

The AW for all practical purposes can't have the pic rail removed (can be done, I read some have done it).

On the other hand the AE rail removes easily. In which I have an after market 20 MOA on mine.

Re: Question about AI Picatinny rail cant

After some calculations, I figured out that I could use the flat base of the AI with the scope I have in mind. For 1kyd it will require a holdover using up to two mil dots, but I'm shooting 115DTACs not 308Win. I knew the Germans use an AI AWM (G-22 rifle) with the same scope that I have and shoot 300WinMag to 1100m, so I realised there must be a way!

Re: Question about AI Picatinny rail cant

the g22 rifle used by the germans has an angled rail, so once installed the scope is angled.

the best option might to get the aftermarket rail fitted to a AW with a dovetail rail.

Re: Question about AI Picatinny rail cant

As Adam stated, all AIAW rifles with pic rail have 0 MOA cant. But you can get the AI mount with varying degrees of canting to your liking. I have the 18 MOA cant for my AIAW 308 and 38 MOA for the AIAWSM 338 LM. The AI mounts are very solid. I certainly have no issues whatsoever. Very repeatable also. I have taken my scope off the rifle and put it back on and it would hold the zero without issues.

One-Eyed Jack,

Is this the scope you have?

Re: Question about AI Picatinny rail cant

awp762, yes, I have the SSG-P and SSG Hensoldts. The latter is used on the German G-22 (AI AWM) sniper rifle in 300WM.

The Germans use a combination of mil dot holdovers and turret dial to achieve a windage offset, so I'm guessing the same could be true of elevation for long range shots. At sea level with a flat base, I should be able to shoot to 900 yards using just the turret dial. At 1kyd I need 7.4 mils of elevation but the erector would bottom out first, so I would use the second mil dot and dial back a little on the turret to 5.4 mils + 2 mil dots = 7.4 mils up elevation.

misterp36, how did you find out about a canted rail for the G-22? I can't find any information online and have looked at images of the G-22 and still can't tell - it looks like the standard rail. As I mentioned, I can use the SSG/SSG-P to 1kyd shooting 115DTACs since I need only 25 MOA or so. There isn't enough up-elevation for 308Win though. I can also zero at a longer range than 100 yards since we have a couple 300-yard ranges nearby.

Re: Question about AI Picatinny rail cant

Thanks, gugubica, but I prefer hardened steel Picatinny rails that are screwed and glued to the receiver (like a Badger). The aluminum USO rail would require either additional holes in my new AIAW receiver (double ugh!) or set screws in the rail that are tightened against the receiver. I can use the Hensoldt to 1kyd on the flat AI base with a simple holdover and avoid drilling into the AI. The AI base is also lower and that's important because the Hensoldt SSG scopes have their own Blitz mount that's pretty tall already as you can see in the images.

Re: Question about AI Picatinny rail cant

Here is an image of the German G-22 rifle that employs the Hensoldt SSG scope. The elevation turret has BDC markings out to 1km for a 300WM round. In the original image with more pixels, it looks like the Picatinny rail is flat, but I sure could be wrong.

Sorry for the delay,

have to tell them it needs to be mil spec picatinny.

I wonder if Seekins will make one?
