Hi All - I was wondering if I could get some advice please ?

I have pretty much a brand new AX308 which has about 200-400 rounds through the barrel (last 200 without any cleaning)

At Bisley in the UK, there's a range called the zero range which is set to a special distance (can't remember the exact distance) at which you can shoot at a special graduated target which has various distances written on it - the idea being you can work out the number of MOA you need to get on paper at various distances without having to book a target of that distance.

I've collated the various numbers for my rifle already (this was done within the first 100 rounds although I can't remember if I did it on a cold barrel or not) and I found I needed 14 MOA at 300 yards.

A month ago, a friend and I were shooting at 900 yards and we were got quite a few bulls - so at that point I know there wasn't an issue with either the shooter(s) or the gun.

Today (at around the 300-400 round mark), we had a few issues shooting at 1000 yards (some of it was definitely due to the marker) and decided to re-visit the zero range and found 19 MOA was required for 300 yards.

I realise there could be several explanations for this - especially as the gun is kept at the armoury at the rifle range (i.e. it could have been used and rezeroed by someone else), or that the scope mounts are loose etc., but putting aside all those reasons, could a dirty barrel be a cause for a 5 MOA difference in adjustments required at 300 yards ?

It's worthwhile to note that once we found the new MOA adjustment for 300 yards, the rifle was consistently able to put rounds very close to it, or even through the same hole - so in my mind this would tend to rule out loose scope base etc.

When checking the rifle back into the armoury, I also found that the silencer had become slightly loose - could this be a factor ?

Or (hopefully) can this difference be explained by the fact that barrel needed to be broken in before consistent MOA adjustments could be found ?

I'd appreciate any assistance.

Thanks in advance.

14 MOA to 300 seems a little odd to me. Is that from your 100 yard zero or from the bottom?

I don't load hot from my M1A, but from 100 I come up to to 200, and from 200 I come up 3 MOA to 300.

I 4 MOA change from one day to the next sounds like somebody is playing with your sights.

Unless you're sights/mounts came loose.

Hi TheFightinFrog - yep - apologies for poorly phrased post - 14 MOA from base for 300 yards - 4 extra MOA from 100 yards.

I have a 0 rail and 20 MOA mount

Re: Question about change in MOA for new rifle ...

the only way someone could make that adjustment on you would be to shim the scope or base

My guess: the first time around you felt resistance in the scope adjustment and (wisely) did not force it - considering that the mechanical bottom, with some further use the turret loosened up and got to actual bottom

but this would be more plausible if the difference was 1-2 moa

check every thing for proper torque (including the scope base) - but again without a obvious wiggle 5 moa is a lot

Oh gotcha, that makes sense. You know that is a good question. I put over 400 rounds through my .308 (without cleaning it) and had very little change in point of impact. I would re-torque everything on your weapon. It's sounds dumb but start at the simplest thing and move to the more complex. Like a loose mount or leaving the ammo in the sun or cold ammo. You'd be surprised how ammo sitting in an air conditioned car versus ammo sitting in the hot sun will change things on ya. Things like that, I always find it's something really simple and I kick myself for trying to over think it. I'd check everything with a torque wrench first. It's happened to all of us about 5 times.

Good luck!

Re: Question about change in MOA for new rifle ...

OK sorry for butting in. I understand now.

Example my zero for my M1A is 11 up for 200 yards, 3 more for 300 would be 14 up.

I was thinking 14 up for 300 from your 100 yard zero.

My AR (White Oak) bottoms out at 200, so everything is up from there. I like the ideal of the adjustable front sight on the ARs. I don't have enough elevation on my rear sight for 1000 without using the front sight. Same if I wanted to shoot 100.

No problem kraigWY - many thanks to everyone for the info - will give it a go this Saturday (although I don't have a torque wrench I'm guessing no one will have messed with that - or at least I'm leaving the checking of that for a later date !)

First thins to do is to tighten my moderator and then to put a few downrange !

I've got a 0 MOA rail, 20MOA base and unfortunately can only get to 1100 max and that's using all the elevation on the reticle as well
