I was talking to someone about high end optics and was told that coatings wear away over time and especially so if exposed to sunlight. Is this something you guys worry about/take into account when picking out optics?

Asking because I’m looking to get some binos and I’m wondering if there is a difference in “glass life” so to speak, between high end stuff like swaro SLC, EL or the razor UHD. Or should I just go with what looks best to my eyes. Saving money is nice but I’d much rather buy once cry once.

If you google optical coating wear you get a lot of info on eyeglasses.
Not the same coating as bio's or scopes.
In bino's and scopes and camera optics they are made diffrently. But still a little delicate.
If yo u constantly clean them aggressively they will wear.
I have coated camera glass 30-40 years old. Some scopes 10-20 years old. Some leica and swarvoiski 1-25 yead old that show no coating degeneration.
Without the coatings the view is for hunger. Invest in a great pair of bino's and stop listening to the bubbas behind the counter.
Talk to the real experts.

Who were you talking to and what is his professional expertise in the area of optical coatings?

If the answers are "a nobody" and "none", why would you even try to vet what he said?

Well, you can keep it in the dark in a nitrogen filled sealed container and never use it.
Years from now after you are gone it will be an old POS scope to some bonehead that bought it on fleabay for $123.
